Whenever i turn the pedals and am going level or uphill
there is a clunk just as i begin the downward cycle (as
far as i can hear it happens both sides).
If i am pedalling without an awful lot of pressure applied
it doesnt
happen

1) cogpin corroded (not even sure what this is!!)
2) Worn cogs on the chainring (but they LOOK ok to me)
My own thoughts are that something is loose (i.e one of
the cranks) -

Clicks and creaks are all caused by movement of some sort.
Although your noise could be several things, it's most
likely to be one of the cranks (the bit the pedal screws
into) moving on the bottom bracket axle (the axle that runs
through the frame, to which the cranks are bolted). It could
be a number of other things, including the bottom bracket
cups being loose, for instance, but I think I'd start with
the cranks.
You need a crank extractor - take the cranks off, clean the
interface between crank / axle, and reassemble. Tighten the
cranks to about 70 Newtons (pretty tight!). If you're not
sure, try to get a friend to help, or take it to a shop.
Be warned, though - finding the cause of this sort of
problem has the potential to be frustrating and long winded,
and expensive if you use a shop.
