  1. Hope you can help me, my bike is making funny noises!

Whenever i turn the pedals and am going level or uphill
there is a clunk just as i begin the downward cycle (as far
as i can hear it happens both sides).

If i am pedalling without an awful lot of pressure applied
it doesnt happen (normally). I have been given various
    possible problems:
    1) cogpin corroded (not even sure what this is!!)
    2) Worn cogs on the chainring (but they LOOK ok to me)

My own thoughts are that something is loose (i.e one of the
cranks) - before i start taking my bike to pieces can anyone
    offer any other suggestions??

    Thanks

    Lee

Clicks and creaks are all caused by movement of some sort.
Although your noise could be several things, it's most
likely to be one of the cranks (the bit the pedal screws
into) moving on the bottom bracket axle (the axle that runs
through the frame, to which the cranks are bolted). It could
be a number of other things, including the bottom bracket
cups being loose, for instance, but I think I'd start with
    the cranks.

You need a crank extractor - take the cranks off, clean the
interface between crank / axle, and reassemble. Tighten the
cranks to about 70 Newtons (pretty tight!). If you're not
sure, try to get a friend to help, or take it to a shop.

Be warned, though - finding the cause of this sort of
problem has the potential to be frustrating and long winded,
and expensive if you use a shop.

Loose cranks? Turn the bike upside down, and press down with
you hands on both pedals at once, as hard as you can. Then
rotate the pedals through 180 degrees and repeat. Do you
    feel a click?

If it isn't a loose crank it's likely to be the bottom
    bracket bearing.

Do you mean cotter pin ? If so, then there should be a small
nut on one side of the crank, near the bottom bracket. Undo
this nut, hit the other end of the cotter pin to force it
further through the crank, then re-tighten the nut. It may
be that the nut is already loose or missing .. 😉 There
should be a cotter pin on each crank, and it could be either
    or both sides need doing.

Must say I haven't seen a bike with cotter pins for a long
time though, so this is a tad unlikely .. unless it's a very
old, or extremely retro / cheap bike.

Must admit, my GUT instinct is the cranks are loose or
    something of that nature.

Guess i have some work to do!!!

If doing this make sure that the bottom bracket shell is
well supported or it may part company with the seat tube
especially if it is an old frame.

It could of course be something as simple as a tight
    chain link.

Not in this case as the noise coincides with crank
    revolution.

I would suspect a loose crank if it was just one side, but
it's more tricky when it's happening on both sides.

Hmm. Could be a bent or worn tooth on the chainring with the
clunk transmitting itself to the other crank.

Boy, do I hate these mastermind quizzes.

  10. I've seen you posts before so I know you have a Raleigh X1.

I bought a Raleigh Chimera road bike last May and almost from the off it made clicking/clunking noises on left pedal down.I took it back to the LBS and he stripped it down, regreased it and,in the absence of evidence to the contrary, put it down to "metal alloy interaction". It did go away for awhile but then started coming and going till one day, nine months after I bought it, it made some crunching noises. That was the BB bearings being mashed. The LBS made two attempts to fit new bearings and rebuild but failed. So I asked him to put in a new sealed unit and charge it to Raleigh under the years guarantee, which he did. I don't know if the X1 has the same cheap "cup and cone" BB as the Chimera but in my expericence (limited I admit, I knew nothing about bikes a year ago) they ain't fit for purpose. My advice would be to take it back to the shop if it's less than a year old.

While I'm here. I have had three instances of broken spokes in 2,400 miles ( at 900,2000,and 2400). Is that within the bounds of bad luck or evidence of a poor quality wheel.

It's evidence of a machine-built wheel. If you have the
wheel retensioned by someone who knows what they are doing
the problem will probably not recur.

It's happening once per revolution - so it's not the chain.

I agree, except that if spokes have started to fail in any
number (3 counts!), then it's likely to need a respoke
    rather than just retensioning.

correct, thats how i eliminated the chain!

  17. LeI ha d asimilar problem, whereby there was a clunk with
every pedal stroke. Both me and my lbs thought it was the
bb, so i had it tightened. No change. I had it replaced no
change. For 8 months after I just got used to the noise,
and then one day decided to bin the strap pedals and put on
some spds. The noise vanished overnight and has not been
    heard since
