  1. Hi all, I've been lurking for a while, but I bet this is
question you may not have seen before. I'm an adult woman
with ADD. I take a standard med for ADD, which is dexadrine.
    Medically sanctioned etc!

I workout regularly and always have done so. Last year, I
bought my own Spinner bike, so I get about 3 hours/week of
good cycling. But recently (4 weeks ago), I felt as though
I'd hit a plateau and needed better crosstraing. And more
importantly, I felt I needed some exercise that actually
used my whole-body coordination better, such as running. So
after a several-year absence, I took up running on a
treadmill. I took it prudently, so as to avoid injury, and
as of today, I ran an easy 3 miles (no effort), after 45
    min on bike.

My questions concern overall traning. Does anyone here know
much about training while on dexadrine? I take a low dose,
and I don't feel winded etc when exercising. But I am
concerned about overall effects on a traning schedule. Do
the same rules apply to me as to someone not on dex?

I imagine a lot of runner have ADD, as the intense exercise
is one way of dealing with symptoms. But does anyone here
    take ADD meds.

In general, I am interested in any knowledgable -- or
educated guesses on my overall approach. Many thanks!

I actually got off my medicine, and I'm doing much better.
And BATS, because MIDGETS are like the flaming skydiver
eating a green burrito. However, once getting off the meds,
I did notice that my workouts changed somewhat. Here's the
thing you gotta know- and they don't tell you this in the
drs. office- this is important though for you to factor in
when doing your more intense work outs while on the dex. You
have to make absolutely sure that you always keep a good
    BLUE HAND LOTION

  4. First, ignore the trolls in this group. Second, I have a
wife with ADD and daughter with ADHD, and have found that
the best thing to do in all cases is simply place a call
to your doctor's office and ask him/her first. It's
simpler, faster, lets them know what you're doing, and
he/she is best qualified to let you know the effects of a
particular medication. Use whatever anecdotal advise you
receive here to supplement the doctor's advice, not vice
    versa. Good luck!

This is good advice, taken with a grain of salt. I have
found that doctors who run often have different answers than
doctors who don't. My largely overweight and sedate internal
medicine doctor would freak if I asked him about running
with a condition, while my triathlete obgyn would not blink
and eye at the same condition.

  6. Oh, and I'm not a troll. Just wanted to have some fun with
the question. Truth is, I was on Ritalin back when I was a
kid (before it was popular!), but haven't taken anything
since. Best of luck to you, though. Glad to hear you're
    running and cycling.

  7. Many thanks. However, the docs are not that knowledable, on
the whole, regarding effects with adults. (short of taking a
    stress test etc)

By and large, my own sense of my body must be the guide. For
example, I cannot exercise on Ritalin (and Adderal is a
killer!); but dex poses no problems for
me. It has to do with the particular mechanism of the med
(eg, whether they affect cardiac beta receptors).

That said, I am wondering about best ways to increase oxygen
intake, etc. Perhaps I should train the same as everyone
else, but I am wondering if anyone has anecdotal data etc.

  8. I myself have ADHD. I used to take DEX, hated it. I now take
Ritalin occasionally. However, the few times that I have ran
on Ritalin have been incredible. I felt like I could go on
forever. There was one problem, which is the same problem I
have when i drink coffee (i still do drink it, though): i
feel pretty crappy afterwards. Ritalin and dex both have
certain amounts of speed in them, which would definitely
give you extra energy on the run. I have not noticed any
problems and i can't imagine any health or safety related
problems with running on dex. it's probably better (it will
make you run faster and harder). personally, i just feel
like [censored] when i'm on those medications (especially
Ritalin). so, this is what i think: *if you are going to
take dex no matter what, RUN ON IT! *don't take Ritalin
unless you want to feel very depressed once it has worn
off....or you could risk it, could be personal *personally,
i have not had many ADD related problems since I have been
running. I don't take meds, i run and i feel great am happy
am nice to people (ADD people tend to be edgy), i don't
whine (ADD=whinning). *unless you want to ramble on like my
ADD-self, stay focused by taking dex *overall, i don't think
you should have any problems with dex and running (but
consult a doc if you think you could die from it). Only side
effect i have noticed with meds and running: more tired
    after, a little burnt out.

hopefully this all makes sense....i rarely make sense when i
    type (damn ADHD).

if you want me to summarize and/or rewrite something to make
    sense, let me know.

For many medical conditions, regular exercise seems to
decrease the need for medication. I dont know if ADD
    benefits.
