The blurb for Cannondale's new frame says they have carbon fiber dropouts on the forks. I had not heard of this before... (I suspect these might be Time forks since that is what the Caad7 had.) Can people in the know comment on this?
I am ok with Carbon forks, steerer, frame, stems, and handlebars, but dropouts seem to get a little scary. I would guess the normal mode is one of compression due to the QR skewers, but my Al ones have indentations worked in them from my zealous tightening. Won't this just crunch and crack CF dropouts in short order--perhaps removing surface chunks with each application?
I have a carbon fork with the carbon going all the way to the dropout. I've never seen another fork like that - every other CF fork I've seen uses aluminium dropouts. I make a point of not using extreme quick release pressure and the dropout has shown no more then slight cosmetic damage.

sounds scary. Trying to balance enough pressure so that your wheel doesn't pop out with too much pressure that might damage the dropout. How much weight can these drop outs save? I can't see the weight savings making up for the risk. --------------- Alex

Perhaps they are just as strong or stronger. And perhaps weight is not an issue, but durability. When you use continous fibers then you don't have to worry about the junction and the glue.
I'm not scared, I just don't use excessive force. I use similar force that I usually use for front wheel skewers.
