What's an "orkut"?

It's an attempt to collect marketing data about you and
commercialize what we now know as USENET. The whole idea of
it being 'exclusive' is just to get people to want to join
and give them a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

It's just another evil experiment. Unfortunately it may

I think maybe there is one for rfc. Someone offered to set
one up some time back. My invitation must have been lost

No, you are thinking about Microsoft's service, I forget the
name but it mines data from Usenet. Orkut is just a
community site, totally unrelated to Usenet.

For those of us on orkut, it is a way to show that are
affiliated. Also, we can invite anyone, which was the point
of my original message -- if anyone wants an invite, I am
extending an invitation.

I'm still confused as to why the need for what is
essentially a more exclusive rfc. What's the purpose of the
group? Is it to talk about food and cooking or is it for
more personal topics (for those frequently OT posters)? And
sure you can accept anyone you want into the group, but what
about the people you don't like? Would you still allow them
to join if they pick your ass? Just wondering...

It's a discussion board, right? I have to admit I don't know
much about it, but I do know it's the same principle.

And a more efficient way to keep track of people and
their habits for marketing purposes. Here's some
interesting perspective similar to what I thought when I
first heard about it.

Which is ridiculous. Gives the impression of some sort of
exclusive club, yet invitations are for sale on eBay.

just ignore each other, or would they hang out together?

sdnet.eats, phl.food, etc... In most of those groups, those
that want to hang out together, indeed do - in person.

moderate Usenet.

Orkut has *nothing* to do with Usenet. What makes you think
it's an attempt to "moderate Usenet" when it's completely
*unrelated* to NNTP/Usenet?
