    > Mate, you said Orkut was trying to "moderate Usenet".

Dude, you're taking me way too literally. Stop being
    so anal.

You did say that. Orkut is unmoderated.

It's moderated in the sense that you need an invitation.

To join Orkut itself. Anybody can join open communities.

    Quoted message said:

And if someone starts to go Sheldon on the community -
there's no way to remove him?

Report them to Orkut. Unlike Usenet, you *can* do something
    about trolls there.

I do not know where you got that from, but Darryl is not
    being anal.

    Yes - he is.

I'm only being "anal" in that you used a word without
knowing what it meant and I corrected you. You're doing the
typical "I'm not to blame for my incorrectness, you are for
wanting me to use words properly".

With Orkut, you can access your account from any computer
with a web browser. With Usenet, you have to be on the
    machine with your news reader.

When away from my computer I use Google Groups--
accessible from any computer anywhere. While at grad
school I used Google Groups exclusively since my college
did not have Usenet access and while in Japan, I used
    deja.com (I still use deja.com technically, since that's
always the address I use :-)) *and* my news reader since
    my news service sucked.

Okay. For me, I use KNode to read newsgroups. When I'm away
from the machine with my home directory on it, I can access
newsgroups via groups.google.com as well. However, I have to
remember what threads I'm watching, what messages I have
read and what ones I haven't, etc. So, yes, you can access
the messages but you have no held state of where you were
    last time you accessed them.

Why a new for rec.food.cooking in Usenet? Some people
prefer a web-based system. I've tried for *years* to get
my wife involved in Usenet, but she and her friends are
more comfortable with things like Delphi since they

    can

    Quoted message said:

control the who sees their conversations without having
to go to email and CC'ing everybody they want to include.

Does Orkut let you do all that? I can see how that would
be a benefit over rec.food.cooking the Usenet group.
Though doesn't rfc chat let you do that, too?

With *all* of Orkut, you can send messages to specific
people, you can setup a moderated public group, you can
    setup an invite-only group, etc.

It's an attempt to collect marketing data about you and
commercialize what we now know as USENET.

No, you are thinking about Microsoft's service, I forget
the name but it mines data from Usenet. Orkut is just a
community site, totally unrelated to Usenet.

And they only collect as much marketing data as you give
them. The number of compulsory fields is really pretty
small, and I haven't received any spam from them.

Yeah - it's a very exclusive club. You can't just go letting
everyone in, then it'd be just like Yahoo groups!

I never planned to set myself up as a serial adding service.
It's not "exclusive" in that way -- it's just not how I

I didn't see the "no more" after Alan, if I had I wouldn't
have asked you. No biggie, just thought it might be fun to
take a look. I can understand you're not wanting to be
bogged down with requests. My computer/news group time is
almost nill these dayz, working 50 hr weeks and all.
