derailleur replacement?

Rear derailleurs don't come in top-pull/bottom pull/etc., so
no need to worry about that.

Does your current one work OK? If only the rubber boot
thingy is shot, then just keep riding. (Your cable may have
gotten globbed up with dirt, so you might need to replace it
and/or some housing.) If you *do* need a new RD, then go
ahead and upgrade a bit to, say, LX. Don't think you *have*
to find a 7-speed, as AFAIK an 8- or even 9-speed will work
fine. (Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.)

As long as your FD is working fine, don't worry about
"matching" the component level with the new rear one. Lots
of people have different grade derailleurs -- usually better
rear than front -- with no problems at all.

Without having seen the rear mech, you probably don't
need a replacement...maybe an experienced tweak, maybe a
small part. Take it to a bike shop and see what they say
- make sure you tell them you want to spend as little
money as possible.

If you do replace, know a few things: -every current
Shimano rear derailleur will work on your ride. -
Toppull/Bottompull does not apply to rear mechs. -The front
derailleur and rear derailleur are independent of each
other. -if your bike came with acera-x, you wouldn't want
any mech better than a Deore (not Deore LX or XT
either...plain Deore) It's more than enough for your type
of riding, and anything else would be overkill.

Get your hands on a Deore or a LX rear derailler. If your
mechanic inclined, you can do it yourself. Make sure you use
a new cable.

thanks to all who replied. I've got the thing mostly taken apart in the
spare bedroom cause I had to put new tires on, otherwise might not have
noticed something was wrong. Anyhoo, will check out the mentioned shimano
derailleurs.

If it's just the little dirt cover, don't sweat it. You
should be able to get another one at your LBS if you feel
the need. Otherwise, I'm not entirely clear what part you're
talking about and I'm too lazy to go to the garage and look
to figure it out... Anyway, lots of good advice in previous
responses. If you feel inclined, you may find what you're

You can also get a decent replacement for around US $20-25
if you feel the need for an all out replacement. Try
Pricepoint, Nashbar, Jensen, or even your LBS if you wanna
shop local.
