Monique,
Since last posting I have started using the Polar S720i which has a
calorie
Quoted message said:counter. The S720i is consistently calculating less calories than
fitday.com
Quoted message said:for me... Fitday.com is roughly 10 - 15 % higher than the S720i...
-p
I use the 720i also. One thing which is crucial to its optimal use, is getting the VO2 max setting
correct. Polar has several paragraphs devoted
to
Quoted message said:explaining this...They have what they call the "Polar Fitness Test", which they want you to do
frequently, so you can update the VO2 max values as
your
Quoted message said:training progresses--and this will change the calories the computer
suggests
Quoted message said:you will be burning on a given workout. It only makes sense that a couch potato at 220 pounds,
will have a relatively low potential for burning calories, compared to a 220 pound muscular person
with strong aerobic base---burning the calories on the bike will be derived on the computer by
figuring the oxygen processing potential of the person, at a given heart rate--again, this is
dramatically different for a fit 220 pounder than it
is
Quoted message said:for a HFS ( huge fat slob) of 220 pounds. Polar also suggests a clinical VO2 max measurement is
even better than their convenient "fitness test",
so
Quoted message said:this could be used instead for even better calorie estimating potential.
I would also suggest that while counting calories is important ( or
weighing
Quoted message said:your protein in ounces for each meal, along with carbs), it is far more important to make sure
each meal you eat has the correct balance of
protein
Quoted message said:and carb, and even the correct amount of fat. I tried Atkins for a while, when I first went on my
"get back into shape" mode ( after 6 years of software development and drastically reduced
riding
Quoted message said:and fitness sports). While it definitely works, it limits you once you
begin
Quoted message said:to reach a certain training volume---when you start doing big miles. I
don't
Quoted message said:think it is designed for an athlete to be able to replenish muscle
glycogen
Quoted message said:effectively, day in, day out, when on an advanced training regimen. So I reverted to more of a
"bodybuilder type diet" , with 7 to 8 ounces of protein in each meal, along with a carb like 1.5
cups of white rice, or
one
Quoted message said:large potato, or if morning, 2 cups of uncooked oatmeal with 7 eggwhites
and
Quoted message said:with 2 yokes. I need around 6 meals per day, each has only the fat in it
of
Quoted message said:the protein source ( either steak, lean ground beef, tuna fish, chicken, turkey, eggs with preset
# of yokes, salmon, hogsnapper!!, etc). I take a multi vitamin and multi mineral supplement, along
with 2 EPA/DHA pills
each
Quoted message said:meal--this has helped enormously in causing my body to burn more fat. So far, since December, I
have gone from 235 to 213 ( business sidetracked me
2
Quoted message said:weeks ago for a slight backslide, but I'm dropping weight again now). I'm getting about 11 to 12
hours of riding each week, along with gym workouts 2 to 3 days per week to keep every major muscle
fiber in my body "calling" for calories to burn ( body builders have pretty well proven
this
Quoted message said:is "more important" than aerobic training in order to burn off unwanted fat...but both is better
than just the gym..Bodybuilders are unwilling to
do
Quoted message said:the aerobic volumes of cyclists, because it will catabolize/burn up some
of
Quoted message said:their muscle mass, and hurt mass development--which I could care less about). And I also think its
critical for a HFS to do lots of core strength, abdominal work as they begin to get back into
shape, since
having
Quoted message said:a huge gut, tends to weaken abdominal support muscles, and postural issues resulting from this
will not be corrected by just losing the fat--and this would hamper the attempt to get back into
shape if not dealt with. Pilates is good for this, initially, and once core strength has
returned, heavy
bag
Quoted message said:workouts with kicking and punching tend to tie in well with both more core strength development,
and interval training. I'll be down to 180 by summer, and I will never allow work to prevent a
lifestyle of mountain biking and good mix of other sports again--meaning I will stay at this
weight/bodyfat level as I have the vast majority of my life after college.
I realize this "gram counting" approach to diet and training will
"nauseate"
Quoted message said:many of the "free spirits" on this NG, however, if you are a HFS, and have been like this for a
few years, it will be unlikely you can succeed in getting in to great shape without major efforts
on your part.....For something this hard, and this important, why not choose the path which is
most effective in gaining the desired results, and take no chances that failure could occur. Once
you are at a 10% bodyfat level , then you can just ride alot and pretty much maintain your fitness
without a lot of gram counting concerns----its getting to the 10% bodyfat level that will
require
Quoted message said:the real effort, not holding it.
I'd much rather be mountain biking than working :-) Regards, Dan V
Dan,
Thanks for reminder on VO2 settings on the S720i. This could be point of error in my readings since
I have not reset/tested this value lately. Since I'm too cheap to get a clinical VO2 Max test I will
re-run the Fit Test.
As for dieting I have found that keeping a log of what I eat works best for
me. On www.fitday.com logging your food you can generate reports on how well you are eating. I have
lost eight pounds since January. I attribute this to increased volume of training and logging
what I eat. When it's 8:00 PM and you feel like a snack go look at your log and see if you
really need it... Anyhow, the other thing I also try to do is keep my meals colorful
(literally)... The more colors the better the food groups, usually.
Good luck on your weight loss. The season is just around the corner, but we still have a little time
to lose...
