  1. A few weeks ago I had a FBG done and got a 110 and I was concerned
that I might be diabetic or heading that way. My doc. said he was not
too concerned about a single 110 reading but suggested I come in for a
complete physical and he would do a complete blood workup. Here are
    the results:

    Fasting BG 95 A1C 5.0 HDL 73 LDL 69 VLDL 9 Trig. 43 Total Choles. 151 Body Mass Index 21.5

His conclusion was that I show no signs of diabetes at this time. I pressed him about the earlier
110 and he didn't make much of it. He stressed that I continue my current 5x/week exercise regiment
that includes 6 miles/day and 1 hour/day of weight lifting and that's all I can do.

    A couple of questions:
    1) Can a single 110 be significant and worth further investigation?
    2) Is there some relationship between LIPID values and diabetes as either a predictor or indicator?
    3) I consume about 2500 calories/day, what would be considered a low (or low/medium) carb. diet in
    terms of calories or grams?

Thanks for any input or comments.

It might be reason to check periodically, but there are all sorts of things that can cause one
aberrant reading, so don't worry about it..

For T2 diabetes, yes, folks often have really bad lipid profiles when diagnosed. You don't. You have
cholesterol levels that a lot of people would kill for.

". . .is there some relationship between Lipid values. . ."

Often times, high triglycerides are a marker for Type 2 diabetes.

You have excellent (low) triglycerides, an excellent BMI, and an excellent exercise history.

Therefore, you have no "markers" for Type 2 diabetes.

You may have a marker for approaching adult-onset T1 diabetes.

You can do nothing to prevent adult-onset T1 diabetes. That is, nothing "reasonable" There's a
possibility that taking immuno-suppresive meds for the rest of your life might keep T1 at bay
but the docs aren't all that interested in a treatment that dangerous to prevent a disease which
isn't very dangerous if controlled. For a while they thought that preventative daily insulin
shots might help (the DPT-1 clinical trials), but it proved not to help. Daily insulin shot(s)
may prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Speaking as an adult-onset T1, my advice is to:

    a. Keep up the exercise. A strong exercise program is fantastically useful to adult-onset T1, or
    any diabetic.

    b. Keep building muscle-mass. High muscle mass is fantastically useful to adult-onset T1 or
    any diabetic.

I speak from direct experience. Both help you control blood sugars very, very, well.

You are very interested in your blood sugar at one or two hours after a high (30 -70 + gram) carb
meal as a marker of approaching adult-onset T1 diabetes. There are some cheap, quality blood glucose
(bG) meters on the market. The Wal-Mart Relion is one.

The LifeScan Ultra and Accu-Chek Advantage are excellent brand name meters which can be purchased
moderately cheaply via rebate offers or combo strip+meter deals, and their testing strips aren't too
expensive if you buy them vial mail order from Hocks

    www.hocks.com

Hocks often has the "best" currently available rebate or meter+strip offer presented on
    their web site.

Click on the blood glucose meter deals link

  4. I think you should relax for awhile.

One 110 reading with your A1c and cholesterol seems to indicate no problem.

As for your diet... you cannot discern if you are eating a low carb diet by looking at your calorie
    consumption.

How many grams of carbs per day do you eat? And why are you concerned about a low carb diet?

  5. If you want to pretend that you have diabetes you could join the group. We have some pretty
    interesting discussions here.

Your glycated hemoglobin test (HbA1c) is a measurement that relates to the duration of time that red
blood cells live. This is about 2 or 3 months. A 5% reading is considered excellent blood glucose
control and reflects the proportion of hemogloblin that is bound by glucose. However, the HbA1c test
    is not used for diagnosis.

  7. Just to be "scriptural" about the matter, the American Diabetes Association recomended guidelines
for a healthy range of blood sugar levels is 80 - 120 mg/deciliter fasting.

I'm probably not alone in wishing I had your numbers so don't go pokin' at the hornet's nest without
    good reason.

If you're just curious, go to the drug store and buy a lancet device. Poke one of your fingers three
or four times a day. Move to another finger the next day. I'll give you a week for you to be
thankful for a BG of 110.

If you still aren't convinced and can convince your Dr. to put you on insulin, make sure you keep
the bottle in the refigerator to keep it fresh. Of course, it'll sting like a three-assed bumble bee
when you inject it but, hey, what price health?

    Cheers

  8. To All,

Thanks for your feedback. I can't help get the sense that some of you are treating me like an
interloper or you site or consider my questions/intererst unworthy. I'm sorry you feel that way. My
dad had diabetes and I was able to see first hand how it affected him. I'm trying to everything I
can to delay and reduce my chances of acquiring it and hence my questions.

One of my concerns was that my diet diretly prior to my fasting test could have affected the
numbers. As I mentioned my doctor seemed unphased by my 110 reading as my 2nd reading was 95. He
said the A1C of 5.0 is squarely in the "normal" range and there is nothing else going on that would
suggest a problem. I suppose I may be overly concerned but why shouldn't I be.

Once again, to those of you who took the time to provide some helpful infomation, thank you. To the
others, please pardon my queries and I suggest you forego responding.
