  1. Okay, for this computer idiot, how does a NG get created?

How does the address get put where ever so I can find it?

    Where is it?

Is there a father or mother of each NG?

    snowin' out, can't ride.....

    Short answer:

rec.* newsgroups get held by creating a Request For Discussion (RFD) and holding a vote, which is
posted to relevant newsgroups (including news.announce.newgroups, a special moderated group for
discussing new groups), and voted on by interested users. If it goes through, the proper authorities
(yes, there are some) send a control message that creates the group.

    eyrie.orgbig eight.html

alt.* newsgroups are created by anyone. You have to send a special message. The hard part with alt
groups isn't getting them created, it's convincing other news servers to subscribe to and
propagate them. This is because anyone can create an alt group, so there are lots of spurious and
    unused alt groups.

    faqs.orgalt creation guide

Use this power only for good, never for evil.

But keep in mind all the cool kids are doing blogs instead of newsgroups these days. A bike-shop
blog would seem to be an ideal format for most stores, since you can update it with just a few free
minutes per day, and most of the configuration is automated

For a group in the Big 8 (like rec.blah.blah) your best bet is to go to the news group called
"news.groups". There is a process to get groups created and it begins there.. However if you are
looking to create an alt.blah.blah group all you need to do is send a properly formatted message
saying Create alt.blah.blah ... most ISP's don't allow that however. news.groups is the best place
to ask for that as well...

    Dear Peter,

It's snowing down south in Pueblo, too, but I bet that you'd rather read this than any quibbling
about addresses, parents, and so forth:

  5. Just in case you were not inundated enough:

    web.presby.eduncreate.html

Gives a detailed, and fairly clear, description of options, choices and actions.

    hope it helps

_ Mostly anybody dumb enough to volunteer, but smart enough to actually make it work. It's an
incredibly thankless job for which you get no pay, lot's of abuse and the respect of a few other
geeks. Basically, the people that run nntp sites have a few sites with trusted admins that they
accept control messages from and there's this funky proposal/discussion/vote scheme they've come
up with to keep the whole thing under control. It's really quite amazing that it works as well
    as it does.

_ Read news.groups for a while to see what I mean.

The theoretical difference between a weblog and a website is that a blog is a regularly updated site
filled with relatively short comments, usually in blog form. Think of the genre as publically shared
diaries, which gives you a good insight into both the power and the horror that can be blogs.

The practical difference is that a weblog is almost always powered by some tidy background software
that handles all the dirty work of formatting pages, archiving and linking posts. All the blogger
has to do is type in a few stupid comments ("If animals feel pain, then why don't they all cry in
the winter from being cold?"😉, and the software does the dirty but boring work.

This means any fool, including me, can have a blog.

peter .. go down down the street to CU Boulder and find either the compsci or physics (i'm partial
to the latter) building. walk inside, find a computer lab and look for the hungriest, dirtiest
undergrad you can find who seems to be endowed with cluefulness (this can take experience to
recognize). ask him (very occassionally a she) how much he wants to forge an nntp control message,
specifically you want him to 0wn an nntp server and inject a control message

Subject: cmsg newgroup rec.bicycles.vecchios Control: newgroup rec.bicycles.vecchios

at least that's how it used to be done. i'm old, tho. i'm also too well paid. you want someone
young, poor and very, very hungry. physics students are better at being hungry since they can't get
outside work as easily. even so a lot of newsgroups have humans behind them validating control
messages so it might not go through.

this is your best chance to get a newgroup in rec/misc.
