Yes, It would be nice to "catch" some professionals while jumping into water at the beginning of the
race... anyone got sth ?
not a long ago I tried to find the instruction movie of Popov's , but still found only some video-
tapes to buy for a lot on ebay, amazon etc...
Regards.

Try this link. There is a flash video you can watch on the top right area. Good tips too...
Why do you want symmetrical start? Track starts are typically faster.

Are you sure? I'd always heard the opposite. Track starts were usually a bit slower (since only one
leg gets a full push), but you were less likely to lose your balance and false start. Hence Pieter
VDH (a track starter) complains about his slow starts, but seldom DQs.
With many events adopting a no-tolerance policy toward false starts, the track start is
becoming popular.

I think trying both would be a good idea - shouldn't be too difficult to determine which style is
better suited to a given individual.

When did this finally get decided? i was under the impression this had been questioned for years
through opinion and scientific study...
...seems they should have just asked Kitty.

I think that symmetrical starts are more powerful as You push your upper body with both Your legs...
but I was disqualified once for false start as I use symmetrical technique ;/ so, I concern alot
about my start technique ...

Sorry, guess out nationals team coach has no clue. The one that cranks out Olympians. Perhaps we
should ask you. Who are you anyway?
Thanks for reminding me what a waster of time this group is.

Since your coach cranks out olympians, he must be right about that too.

Ask your coach to explain; he cranks out olympians. Ask him what BTDT stands for too, because I
don't know.

I *think*, though i would never go so far as to predict her thoughts or deeds, it may mean "Been
there, done that". Remember, in the few months she has been a competitive Masters Swimmer, she has
forgotten more than we ever knew.

Ask your coach to explain; he cranks out olympians. Ask him what BTDT stands for too, because I

That stumped me too. Based on my google search I have it narrowed down to:
a.) a surreal reference to BTDT Capitol Corporation
b.) Been There Done That
Assuming option "b" represents Kitty's intent, I'd say good for her, but pass this recommendation
(I.e., try each method yourself) on as a caveat to whomever is asking about starts rather than deal
only in absolutes. I would also offer that there are likely to be quite a few other coaches out
there that also "crank out Olympians" that would advocate a symmetrical start (or at least wouldn't
dismiss it out of hand.)
By the way, Martin, your reference to the sword of Damocles in the other thread has you forever
endeared to me, like it or not :-). Sorry about your candidate dropping out too - I may well have
voted for him.

Does putting down others make you feel better? It certainly makes you look rather lame.
So, what is your ASCA certification level?

I'm always baffled by anyone that takes anything posted on a Usenet newsgroup as an absolute anyway.
Seems like they can't see the forest from the trees, and take themselves way too seriously. Just
about nothing in life is an absolute anyway, and those people that see things as absolute, or black
and white... well, let's just say, I can understand where their constant aggravation comes from. It
must be tough in the ever changing world to see everything as an absolute. What a perfect setup for
disappointment, by anything and everything.

I should have been able to figure that out. If a person can't master two different swimming starts,
and be able to decide which one is better for her leg strength and body weight, after a whole six
months of masters training, well she might as well just stay in bed.
