  1. Well, while I had insurance, I managed to get one doc to agree to try to get my insurance to pay fr
strips. I had not had any insurance that would, before tht, but I did get a discount. So we made and
experiment, and l and behold, free strips. The way he wrote the prescripton for the drug store, I
guess, is how this occurred. Anyway, I was able to get the biggest box 4 times a month, Look, don't
ask me how, I don't know, but when I discovered I could, I went dutifully every week. So I began to
stockpile them. Then I changed insurance again and had to use a different meter that this insurance
paid for and my stockpile of other strips dissappeared to the back of my dark bathrooom cabinet. I
just read something in a post on here recently the someone was told they wereobsessed with their
numbers. This was me, for a while and I've been chastised by more than one doc for chasing numbers
too tightly. When you are type one it is alot more necessary than type two, so they all said. 10
points high or low, who cares. "When you get up over 175 all day for a week, call me." Well, unless
something had gone very wrong, I knew an extra treadmill run or 30 minute walk would about take care
of most any small high and some food for a low, and I wasn't going to get worse or die if I had 1
bad day a week. So I stopped testing, one becasue it began to cost money. two because I stayed
within a range, 90 % of the time, and only tested when I was ill or felt funny. It did seem
obsessive to test 4 times a day for nothing. So aware of how I feel during highs and lows, I know
something is off. Well, I had a need to test, and I had no strips and got out the horded stash. Used
them and they didn't seem wrong. Bought some and tested ad the old ones were okay. Same reading.
What is this about ? Do they really expire ? I wouldn't bet my life on it but it seems like maybe
something is afoot here. Is this just another medical rip off ? They were over a year old. I
wouldn;t tell someone to use expired strips, but I have been testing for over a week, side by side
with new strips and theold ones are fine ??!! .... Rainbow

AFAIK, strip expiration dates are set to keep the lawyers happy. The lawyers tell the companies
that make them to make d*mn sure there's an expiration date, and to make d*mn sure that the
    expiration date is very conservative.

Doc Biggs complained about medical expiration dates in one of his posts a while back. The expiration
dates are arbitrary and capricious. He said in effect that we have more information on our cars than
our meds, and the FDA doesn't help much in that area.

Keep them cool and dry. Dry is more important but cool is definitely up there too.

I'm currently using expired Freestyle sticks purchased from EBay. I wouldn't recommend using the
sticks more than a few months beyond the expiration date.

The expiration dates were probably set by a combination of conservative factors, based on possible
heat exposure during shipping and storage plus the desire to turn the stock over quickly.

Since you can easily check using control solution, if the strips are more than a couple of months
out of date an occasional control test might be prudent. As long as they test ok they I think they
    should be fine.

  5. Rainbow, writing such a long post without breaking your thoughts into logically arranged paragraphs
makes for torturous reading. I was intrigued by your subject line, but decided to skip the pain of
    reading your post...

  6. And I detest it when people complain about how other people write. i write the way I speak, in a
word and carefree manner and I don't care if you skipped it or not. Someone must read it ... I get
alot of personal email. Are you one of those people who uses your for you're or prolly for probably
... do you diagram every sentence for content. Also take in to cinsideration that I can't see very
well at all anymore and I can't always tell how something looks when written. What you replied to me
sounded like a cranky insult. Rainbow Man if i complainedabout every minor little thing, I would
just about never shut up ... now it ooks like me that's cranky !

  7. You mention not being able to see the screen well. There are products which enlarge what is on the
screen. Many times it helps to use a larger font size in your software or choose a different screen
size in the windows desktop. Ask a computer savvy friend to help you.

  8. I was attempting to inform you that your writing style is difficult to read. That's constructive
criticism; not a cranky insult. Do it your way, RAINBOW!

  9. My screen, which is a real tv not a computer monitor, because I can't see the monitors at all, is
set to te highest level. This tv screen has more light to it which helps me to see. Thank God I
doesn't come out white background light blue print like some newsgroups I read, I can't see that at
all. I have to print those out or send it to another email account that comes out black.

Chill out Dave, it's only a newsgroup note and not everyone is gramatically logical.

As it happens, I didn't find Rainbows post difficult to read at all.

  11. it wasn't a grammar issue, Beav. The issue was that the entire post was written without paragraph

old strips tend to give less accurate results

but old strips are generally *still* useful (so long as you keep in mind that they may be
    less accurate)

with regard to less expensive strips, go to hocks.comdiabeticproducts.htm and
order one "meter deal" for a Fast Take meter+100strips = $37.99 plus two boxes of Fast Take 50
    strips (2*19.95) = $39.90

which gives you 200 excellent strips (and a "free" meter) for only $76.89. 🙂

the order is 2 bucks short of meeting their minimum for free shipping, so order something else and
get free shipping. (the A1C Now Hemaglobin A1c Home Test 3/PK @ 3/$45 (under regular "meters"😉 looks
like a good deal to me, but i've still not tried them (yet))

Tiresome maybe, but not difficult, and how many people who post to NG are English majors? Not many
as far as I've ever been able to establish, and placing yourself in the position of school teacher
won't make her (or anyone) write how YOU want them to.

I'm not flaming Dave, just pointing out another viewpoint. Flaming only serves to decrease the
possibility that something good could be learned, and I'm not about to do that, so as you say...
    onwards and upwards🙂
