  1. In order to compete for a win at the pro level most professionals feel like they have to dope
(unless they possess an extraordinary genetic talent).

Recreational drug use is much more efficacious. When everyone at a party is doped up, at least every
single person is having a better experience than if they were sober.

At a bike race, if everyone is doped up, they aren't having a better time - they're having the same
experience as it would be if every racer was clean.

    Bike racers are stupid.

Thank you very much and have a nice day.

Just watched the "Outside the Lines" on Lyle Alazado again last night. Just
shows you how desperate some people are to win at any cost. He always said that
he couldn't live without being the best. Physically he wasn't until he started
taking outrageous amounts of just about everything. That combined with a psycho
drive to work and win, worked and he won, until he got too sick to do anything.

There's no way to keep people who are this determined, and the NFL didn't care because
steroids were still legal. They operated under Brian's theory of let them all take what they
wanted. Doesn't actually seem to have killed off too many of them, and I'm sure it's still
    going on. Bill C

And your're speaking from personal, first hand knowlege? Or, just from what you've read in the
(admittedly biased) sports news? I thought so. Try, for once, to form your own opinion from the
facts instead of letting the press force-feed you the "thought of the day" for a change.

cycling is like rock'n'roll - all the best performances are drug performances.

Since everyone seems to get busted with hgh:

    avantlabs.commagmain.php

"In a review of the topic (7) Rennie cites recent research conducted at the Danish Institute of
Sports Medicine where GH administration to trained athletes actually impaired their performance (8).
In these studies healthy endurance trained athletes were unable to complete accustomed cycling tasks
after administration of exogenous hGH. The authors suggest that this could be a result of an
observed increase in plasma lactate in the GH group compared to placebo. The significantly elevated
lactate could result from the inhibition of the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) by high levels
of fatty acids released during GH-stimulated lipolysis. With PDH thus inhibited, pyruvate, produced
from the glycolysis of glucose, is unable to enter the mitochondrial citric acid cycle and
accumulates instead as lactate. One problem with this theory however, is that despite the increase
in plasma free fatty acids observed by the authors, there was no apparent increase in lipid
oxidation. The latter would be expected to be required to inhibit PDH. In any case, by whatever
mechanism, GH administration clearly adversely affected cycling performance in this experiment."

Well, that's painting with a pretty broad brush. For example, look at Minor Threat (from DC).
Those guys were at the forefront of the 'straight-edge' deal (no drinking, no drugs) and their
shows are renowned for being powerful and generally incredible. On the other hand, another band
from the same era and basic locale, the Bad Brains, were equally strong performers, but those
    guys smoked tons of pot.

Sometimes watching other people in various states of loaded is pretty fun - especially if you
get the opportunity to remind them of some of the things they said and did while in that
    state, heh...

    What gave it away?

Hmmmm.... let me think... thinking an "adult" conversation is possible on rbr? Or that the author calls himself "hardware lust"? Or that he claimed to be having an adult conversation himself with such zingers as "[censored] you very much" and "[censored]" and "*plonk*".
Ah. So much in so few words. That is pure talent.

Now back to the topic: I know for a fact that it is possible (at least in women's cycling) to be clean and to be at the very tippy top of the field worldwide in one day races. Now, for stage races I'm not so sure.

It exhibited a anabolic effect (which is also mentioned in the first link).

If it was a strong effect (like steroids) you'd think some of the studies mentioned in the first
article would have seen long term changes in body composition.

So basically, it's like the difference between Adam Hodges "meat is murder" Myerson and Andrew "MTBs

performances in their day, so I take your point.

Ben saw the Bad Brains once - awesome show, even though there was no beer (all-ages).
