I opted for Morrisons and digging over my vegetable plot, spreading a bin full of home made compost,
recycled mostly from clippings, green tops from last years crop, tea bags, banana skins and other
food waste. Later in the day I went skiing so I don't feel too bad about not going cycling, I
especially did 2 evening rides last week in case I didn't get out at the weekend.

The wind was pretty fierce in where I live.

Gawd! It must be a York speciality, this pedalling out to do daft things in inappropriate weather!
Have you ever actually been blown off, or do cyclists not present enough surface area? I've been
blown off the road on a motorbike....

I set off out for a ride early this morning, all okay(ish) if cold and windy until a bit beyond
Bishopthorpe when I passed a couple of runners who shouted "it's very, very icy down there" and lo
and behold, they were right - icy crusts on puddles and frosty patterns on the road. In view of my
recent A64 high jinks I chickened out and U-turned home. Roll on spring!

Since it was ment to be a long steady ride, Chris and I just settled down to a nice steady 15mph
plod and didn't try and fight the wind.

shower for a long while to get warm again.

Yes, I went to Rutland Water to do a spot of windsurfing but after half an hourish of being on and
in the water decided it was too cold so packed up the windsurfing kit, got me bike out and cycled
the perimeter instead. Which was nice!

Are cyclists disproportionately likely to have allotments; are allotment holders disproportionately
likely to be cyclists?

(And do you live somewhere where it has been dry enough in the last week for it to be feasible to be
out digging this weekend?)

I was blown off in Edinburgh once. Came to stop at a traffic light and a guest of wind blew me
across the road before I could get my foot down!

Yup, many years (14 or 15ish) ago on a paper round in Wolverhampton! Unfortunately the huge shoulder
bag (admittedly devoid of papers as I had just finished my round - if it had been laden down, the
effect on my balance would have been even worse!) acted as a sort of 'sail', with inevitable
results....

I've been blown into the kerb, which comes to the same thing. It was a gust that caught me when I
passed a side-road (in Liverpool, with many amused onlookers). Oh, and just to make doubly sure I
attracted attention, I was soloing on a big red tandem at the time.

Not sure ! I read a tongue in cheek article on a site recently that said cyclists are likely to be
into recycling, not just bottles and cans but other items of waste ! I am small scale, just one
compost bin for my own garden and organinc kitchen rubbish, one bin full is about enough for my
plot. Now its empty and there bushes are bare I need to cut them down, shred the clippings and refil
my bin ! I started gardening to get some outdoor off bike activity. Recycling waste is not the
primary aim but it seems like the right thing to do, better than driving to a tip to dump it (the
council would mulch it so dumping is not TOO bad). Saves me buying any form of compost to
recondition my soil too. Last year I grew carrots & parsnips, this year I am going to add onions to
my range. I had intended to make parsnip wine last year but never got round to it, maybe this !
Sadly I have not found the balance between digging and cycling and several times last spring I'd
intended to go cycling after my digging but was simply too knackered !

I'm in West Yorkshire and it has been far from dry in the last week. I was surprised how easy it was
to dig, not as claggy as I expected.

There was a big storm circa Autumn 1989 in London, during which I was attempting to make my way into
central London from the east, along the Mile End Road. At one point I had just started from the
lights when a gust came blasting off the Bow flyover with such venom that only the presence of a
handy roadside lamp-post, around which I was able to wrap an arm, prevented me from:

1. stopping dead, and possiblty
2. re-entering the Stratford one-way system very fast and backwards.

Of course by home-time the wind had died. As had our garden fence.

We had hail and pounding rain on the TC ride on Sunday. Muggins here had forgotten to pack a cap,
so had to ride one handed so I could open my eyes. Only lasted a few minutes but was cold as a
cold thing.

In contrast, the afternoon saw us tackle a flooded road. Came over the wheel hubs, so feet got wet
as the pedals descended the murky depths. But not _that_ cold.

Must go and regrease my bearings (and remove the vegetation).
