A normal, non-diabetic has a glucose regulatory system which tries to keep their bG at about 85
mg/dL (4.7 mmol/L)
The regulation is not perfect, nor ultra-fast in responding to meals and exercise but the younger
and healthier you are, the better it is.
I have a standing offer to test my friends for abnormal sugar with my home testing meter. I try to
test them at what should be the highest point of their day, two hours after a meal (and I usually
give them candy to kick it up a notch). I have never observed any of my friends above 100 mg/dL. The
last one was 88 mg/dL. My wife (an old person, like me) is in the low 90's every time despite a diet
which would reduce many diabetics to tears.
The further you deviate from 85 mg/dL, the closer you are to "diabetes"
Diabetes is not a simple medical condition which can be detected almost as if it had an on-off
switch. It is characterized by destruction of the beta cells which produce insulin. The more
destruction one has, the more erratic their bG. The doctors "draw a line in the sand". They
establish an arbitrary levels of blood sugars which formally define the existence of the disease, or
the existence of arbitrary conditions called impaired glucose tolerance, or impaired fasting glucose
or pre-diabetes.
On average, a T2 diabetic suffers damage to their beta cells for 10 years before their sugar control
reaches the level of instability which the doctors currently define as "Diabetic". . .(hmmm. . .or
was that according to last year's line in the sand?). Aggressive doctors could draw their own lines
and treat folks as diabetic at any time during those 10 years.
Good thing that you're interested. There's a sneaky way to avoid or at least delay the whole issue
if you catch it early. They have proven in co ntrolled clinical trials that changes in lifestyle
which include:
a. Losing fat lb
b. Gaining muscle lb
c. Exercising vigorously every day.
will delay the onset of the disease. Many smart folks believe that
d. Rationing your carb intake, eating slowly-digesting carbs, and spreading your total daily
carb over several small meals during the day will also help.
Type 2 diabetes is a genetic condition Keep coming back if you suspect you have the genes. Paying
attention to our experiences can lead to a longer, more pleasant life for you.

When I first joined this ng as a scared newly diagnosed Type 2 I opened a seperate folder in "My
Documents" for good advice worth reading again and again.
I found I had to add a few sub-folders for some special posters Like Jennifer, Dr Biggs and a
few others.
I think I'm going to have to start cataloguing and indexing Old Al's folder. It's getting too full.
