that I am going w/ the Fox Talus RL front shock, but I am a bit stumped on the rear. It seems that
everyone has a different recommendation. One shop tells me that if I get anything other than the
Fox Float RL I am wasting my money. Another shop says the same thing, only they recommend the 5th
Element Air/coil.
I am a Clydesdale (6'3"/235) with a lot of experience XC and a trip or two to Northstar and
Mammoth each summer. I've read the reviews on mtbreview, but was also curious as to what people on
the newsgroup have to say about their experiences... Thanks ahead of time!
It depends what you want and how hard you ride. If you want a lockout, maybe you want to look at
the LBS' Float RL. You say you're real experienced, so maybe you don't want the lockout - so don't
get a Float RL.
The 5th Element and Swinger shocks are SPV designs, no lockout because they're supposed to (at the
very simplest) eliminate pedal bob, unless you're thrashing the ranks...something an experienced
rider doesn't do.
If I were 235 and rode anything more than a little bit hard, I'd get a coil shock...and the 5th
element coil is a nice, and by all reports, effective design.
It seems anymore that Fox, 5th E, and Romic are the only real choices in shock replacement. I
understand the Romics to be better for harder riders, and you can decide between Fox and 5th by
figuring to what you want the shock to do.
