  1. Third in a series😄 My project bike does not have the single piece Ashtabula crank; rather it has a three piece crank in a serviceable BB. While I'm sure the bearings could stand to be replaced I have had no problems at all with crank action. Given that the spindle is square taper and all seems well with the system is there any pressing need to replace the BB? I know I will need to check spindle length more accurately (best measurement I can get at the moment puts it 110-120 mm) for chainline.

  2. Yep, as long as your crankset is compatible with your square taper BB and your chainline works there's no reason to change bottom brackets but I'd at least service it and regrease the bearings while you're doing the rebuild and have things apart.

    Lot's of good 10 speed square taper cranksets available on ebay and craigslist so that's a pretty easy item to source.
