Hello all. My name is Dave. I am in the process of getting a new bike. I am not here to ask What should I do here or with this. I'm sure Ill find my answer in the forums somewhere. All I can say is this. Yes I want to go out on the first day and ride 35 miles. But I know that is impossible for a 6'3" guy at 280. So I will continue to dream that. But I will say this. I am buying 2 heavy Murray Windrunners (1 for me, 1 for my wife) to just start in on. I am not racing but looking to slim down first. So I hope in 1 to 2 years Ill be able to start racing.
I guess I just wanted to say Hi and I'lll be around. I may not know about Bicycling since my Huffy Vortex in the 80s. but if you want to talk about jeeping I know that. Anyways hello all.
Cycling can be a great way to burn off calories. Even though you'll sweat... the breeze [from cycling] can often evaporate much of the wetness so you don't feel as hot and sweaty. Because you're on wheels the exercise isn't as hard on joints as jogging or hiking... for heavier cyclist.
I myself started back to cycling after health problem left me barely able to walk.... but I could ride a bike. Long story short.... I've lost plenty of weight and have gotten pretty fit in just a couple seasons.
Thank you. I just dread sitting in my basement working out on the bowflex. yea it feels good but the whole Sitting still working out 1 thing just is not well fun. The more I thought of it, the more cycling came to mind.
I thank you for your encouragement. I just hope I get these bikes so I can start again. To me. It is not only the wind in the face, but the view, and the satisfaction that I can get there without a gas peddle. Thank you. I will let you know how it goes on my first biking.
Well I got a bike today. It is not a race bike by no far means. Weighing in at 40 lbs my new Schwinn 26" Men's Cascade Bike is just heavy. But I was able to go out and pull off over 6 miles. Not to bad considering I have not been on a bicycle in well over 20 years, and I quit smoking almost 6 months ago. My legs feel like jello right now, but I feel good. Now on to the Bike.
Well with a full steel frame it is no wonder this has a shipping weight of 40+lbs. The weight of the front fork is a lot of it all. Not to mention the rims. But the front forks with the shocks have to be a good 5 to 10 lbs. But with 21 speeds, you really can get this thing moving. I hope to get new forks, Rims, and handle bars for it so that I can lighten it up for myself a bit. I really do like the way that the shifter was integrated in to the handles. on a side note there is a bicycle shop right around the corner from my house called "Terry's Bikes etc" He really to the time to explain what I should expect from this Bike that I did not even buy from him. He helped me out and set it up for my height and also sitting position. So now the bike is truly set up for me.
I returned to cycling with and old bicycle I bought at a yard sale. My first ride was down to a Circle K for a cup of coffee... less than a mile for home. My legs were so shaky when I hopped off the bike at the Circle K that I nearly went to the ground.... right there in the parking lot.
Progress comes quickly if you just stick with it! You've got a great start.
I used to own (thirty years ago) a 1970 Jeep. It had a buick made V6 in it if I remember correctly. It was jacked up with wide mudder tires... it was fun.
Yea, but now in days most people buy jeeps for the "Mall Rated" Insignia. They never even take it off road. But hey, to each their own. I can mud all day long. but I am just happy that I am doing 5 miles right now on the bike. Im hoping that I can get up to 8 by the end of the week. All I can think to my self is why did I wait till 4 months ago to stop smoking? Why did I even start? Ugg. What did you do with the old jeep?

Have you forgotten already how cool people used to look when smoking? I smoked until after my retirement... you're correct.... what a waste of time, money, and health.
I had a growing family at the time and needed a more child-friendly fuel-efficient car. So I sold the Jeep to a guy who intended to use it for competitive mud runs. Don't know how that worked out for him.

Jeep, when it was owned by American Motors, bought parts from EVERYBODY! Yes, they used the sweet aluminum Buick (IIRC, Olds used it too) motor. I've owned severa AM vehicles (including that 1988 Cherokee in the picture...it still runs great and I just put a new 22-gallon gas tank in it last month. It was and is a challenge to figure out if your starter motor or alternator or such was procured from Ford, GM or Chrysler! The inside door handles on that Cherokee are identical to the ones used on my 1970 AM Ambassador!
Ride and ride and ride. You WILL blow your lungs cleaner. You WILL lose weight! You WILL get stronger and have more endurance!
Watch out for the idiot drivers. They drive every type of vehicle known to man.

Truth. Mall-Crawlers. Usually lifted...often with mudders...sometimes with trucknutz...always with a flatbill at the wheel.
I need 4-wheel drive to bust thru 3' snow drifts on my township road. (C'mon global warming!) And to haul my track bike out to pavement in the dead of winter! I gots to ride, man!
I could only laugh at the truth being spoken here. Ahh yes the jeep that you could fix with anything. Ive heard the stories. I wish it was that easy now.
I was able to cut almost 2 mins off my little run that I do around my block.
Here is what I got this morning. 4.79mi Distance
20:59 Duration
13.7mi/h Avg Speed
Here it was the other day. 4.66mi Distance
22:38 Duration
12.3mi/h Avg Speed
Looks like it is time to add a mile or 2 to it even though my legs feel like I have 80 lbs of leg weights after I got done. But on the sad part, I am now 285 and not 280. Ugg. I want to get down to 230-220.

I know that heartbreak!
This summer I [jokingly] shared my story of one day when I skipped lunch, ate less than 1000 calories for the entire day, PLUS I bicycled over 25 miles. The next morning I had gained two tenths of a pound.
Most of the daily changes in weight (particularly at our size) are more closely related to hydration than actual fat. Of course exercise alone won't be enough for weight loss. Many skinny cyclist merely load up on calories so they can keep on cycling... it isn't that hard. Last summer I would often treat myself to an ice cream treat after bicycling nearly five miles to the Dairy Queen. It wasn't till after I did the math that I realized I was eating more calories than I was burning by cycling.
The Internet is crammed pack full of diet information..... and there are tons of other outlets that offer professional help. I use an android app that helps me track calories and control how much I eat. With the app I use (called lose it)... it takes my weight and shaves 1000 calories daily off what would normally be required to maintain that weight. That amounts to 7000 calories a week. A pound of fat is equal to about 3500 calories... so I lose more or less 2 pounds a week. I come close to doubling that via the burning of calories by cycling. If 4 pounds a week doesn't sound like much... if you did that for a year... you'd weight 80 pounds. [humor].
I eat regular balanced meals... and I see my doctor from time-to-time as well. I sleep a full nights sleep every night... and I am careful to keep myself well hydrated. Keep the faith! Eat a little less than your body needs to stay heavy.... and keep active... and you will lose weight.
Oh yea. The app I have MapMyRide also has the calorie counter as well. I stay around 1900 with that. As per my Dr. Basically your weight is your current calorie intake. You want to cut that by 10 to 15 % so actually I am way under that. Now I am walking that mile or 2 during my lunch break. The issue right now is that I am not use to going the distance that will allow me to burn more calories. But I know I will get there. It's just going to take time. I thank you for sharing your experience with me and others that will read this. This only helps us all know it will happen.

Note that "calorie counters" are notoriously inaccurate, most often reading high, i.e. telling you you've burned more calories than you actually have.
I would agree, except this program also reads my pulse, speed, and cadence, along with the elevation at that time. While it may still be high, I would think that it will be a lot closer then just a simple I rode x far for x amount of time. But I do agree that they may be off.
