  1. Hi everyone,

Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away. How are you planning to treat the day? Do you have
special recipes that you are using, or are you planning to eat less of normal fare. (or spurge?) Are
you nervous about it? Relaxed? Stressed?

I made my menu today, and did a bit of both..some lighter recipes...some of my normal things...and
left out some things altogether. I really think my mind set is very different with WW this time. I'm
not stressed about the extra food...I'm going to just see how I feel on the day and eat what seems
right as well as making sure to take a very long walk in the morning.

I've seen so many people on the WW message boards totally consumed with how they are going to get
through the day without blowing the diet. It really made me ponder the whole
holiday/food/entertaining issue and how food plays such a big part in it.

  2. Last year I made mostly low point side dishes, fat free gravy etc. It was fine. Nobody even noticed.
This year I am making everything "normal" eating small portions of everything I want, having a 3
point breakfast that day, and 0 point soup in the evening, and just enjoying the day.

    I hope. 🙂

  3. no stress in the food department, I know I can eat whatever I want and
therefore I can eat it on turkey or wait for another day. I am going to
family so I won't be cooking and that makes it tricky but there is always
plain turkey and usually salad as well, I just refuse to let one day freak
me out as this day will occur every year for the rest of my life, there is

  4. We have other plans on Thursday, but turkeys are so cheap, I bought one and roasted it Sunday and we
had some of the fixin's but not what we usually have. My plan was not to make the full spread, just
treat it like a big chicken - I roast those all the time, no big deal. Then we invited some
relatives, and it was a real dinner after all. This is funny, because we've done a real feast every
year, with 25 guests, three turkeys, etc., until this year.

We did somewhere in the middle of all the options you listed. We had sugarfree pumpkin custards with
cool whip. We did make the traditional giblet stuffing (but not the cornbread stuffing with
hardboiled eggs and sausage), and mashed potatoes, peas, cranberry sauce, gravy... We didn't make
the pearl onions in gruyere sauce, and we just roasted the butternut squash plain (my wife grew up
with it mashed with lots of butter and salt). No apple pie, no homemade bread.

On my second glass of wine, I said, "aw to heck with it," and decided I was just going to skip
logging my points at all. It's only one day, after all. I did go back for seconds.

Later on, I decided I ought to go ahead and log my points after all. It took me a while to put it
all in, guessing at how much of each thing I ate.

I'll tell you, the WW web site is starting to tick me off! I just went to look, and it says I had 13
points left that day! I know I put about 35 points in for dinner alone. It was a real hit to the
flex points. Right now, it only shows 10.5 points for the turkey. ARGGGH! I want to find their
webmaster and punch him in the nose. The real aggravation is that it threw out my activity points,
and I had earned 5 of them that day!

I have no idea where I stand for the week now. Okay, I have nothing good left to say, so I'll just
    stop here.

  5. I ate normal within points yesterday and today. Tomorrow is travel day. I'm hoping to make some good
choices over the rest of the week, but I will not be journaling. I'm not going to stress over it.
I've made excellent progress and come Monday, all my points reset anyway!

  6. An apple-sour cream pie with a brown sugar/pecan topping - NOT WW but it sounded interesting. I'm
hoping to make reasonable choices before dessert (G)

  7. I'm not planning on treating it any different than any other day of the year ... other than spending
the time with family members that I don't get to see very often. As far as the eating part goes ...
I will not obsess, I am not worried. It is ONE day of my life .. what happens, happens - I'm trying
to keep things in perspective. I will watch portion sizes, but don't see it as a big problem since I
watch them every other day of the year. The only recipes I have changed are really the same as I did
last year - using light/higher fiber bread in the stuffing, instead of regular bread... couldn't
tell a difference at all. Candied sweet potatoes with sugar free syrup instead of regular - better
option anyway since there are a few diabetic in the family... again, not even a teeny change in
flavor. Other than that, what is there to really sweat over? Turkey is a wonderful protein choice
anyway. And one slice of whatever for desert is not going to hurt in the long run.

I do think some people go totally overboard or become obsessive, maybe they focus more on the meal
splurging thing. For me the meals never seem to be the challenge ... I have a harder time through
Christmas with the constant barrage of *treats*.

  8. If I'm feeling better and have Thanksgiving:

I won't count points. It is just ONE day. I can't remember really ever overeating on Thanksgiving.
I'll be using some of my Flexpoints for sure, but probably no more than 6 or 7. (Since I am sick
this week, this will probably help me get nutrients I need.) Yes, there will be desserts, but just
    have a taste.

  9. My thoughts.... do whatever feels right to you. It doesn't matter what you
eat one day...it matters what you eat all the time. There are as many ways
to handle it as there are people:
    1. Forget WW and really pig out for the one day.
    2. Stay totally on program and use your flex points.
    3. Stay close to program and make up for it with extra exercise and eating less the rest
    of the week.
    4. Decide it's too hard to do WW during the holidays and quit.

Guess what....only #4 will cause you to fail, any other way you choose may cause a temporary
    setback or not.

  11. Hi Lesanne,

That sounds good and sort of what I'm doing, except I'm trying out a few new low point side dishes.
I like the idea of trying to make the day as much like a "normal weight" person would do it. So
trying to eat lighter in the day, exercising a little more and splurging a little makes sense to me.
My weigh in day is Thursday, so I have the whole lot of Flex points if I want them, but something
tells me I probably won't. The whole thing has really clicked for me this time.

  12. Hi Lee,

One thing that seems to make a difference to me is the fact that WW isn't a diet. I haven't denied
myself anything other than overindulgence, and large portions. Once I got into that
mindset...knowing I could eat pretty much anything I wanted as long as I planned, the rest has sort
of fallen into place for me.

When I read the WW message boards, I can see who might be a good maintainer and who will probably
lapse...those who might regain seem to think of it as a "diet." I haven't thought that way at all,
and it's a great feeling to lose weight thinking that way.

  13. I am also not going to stress over food this holiday week. I'm at my mothers for the week. That is
hard enough for me to deal with. So far I have done pretty well at keeping at the right number of
points and eating properly-lots of chicken, steak, shrimp and veggies. Tonight I did splurge a
little by sharing dessert with my daughter. She ate most of it. I might have only had 4 bites. Thats
all that I needed. I guess eating the right way is not that hard for me. Maybe I found the "switch"
that people have mentioned here. Thursday we go to a buffet dinner. I will have some turkey, a
little bit of stuffing and potatoes, lots of green veggies to fill my plate. Or I might do something
completely different and have fish instead of turkey. That's what I like about a buffet. So many
choices. But I know that I have plenty of flex points to use since Thursday is day 1 of my week. But
I know deep down inside that I can make the right choices.

  16. Hi Stan,

The points they said for turkey may be right. White meat turkey without skin is very low in points.
Dark meat is heavier, and with the skin...well...enough said.

We have other plans on Thursday, but turkeys are so cheap, I bought
one and roasted it Sunday and we had some of the fixin's but not what
we usually have. My plan was not to make the full spread, just treat
it like a big chicken - I roast those all the time, no big deal. Then
we invited some relatives, and it was a real dinner after all. This
is funny, because we've done a real feast every year, with 25 guests,
three turkeys, etc., until this year.

We did somewhere in the middle of all the options you listed. We had
sugarfree pumpkin custards with cool whip. We did make the
traditional giblet stuffing (but not the cornbread stuffing with
hardboiled eggs and sausage), and mashed potatoes, peas, cranberry
sauce, gravy... We didn't make the pearl onions in gruyere sauce, and
we just roasted the butternut squash plain (my wife grew up with it
mashed with lots of butter and salt). No apple pie, no homemade
    bread.

On my second glass of wine, I said, "aw to heck with it," and decided
I was just going to skip logging my points at all. It's only one day,
after all. I did go back for seconds.

Later on, I decided I ought to go ahead and log my points after all.
It took me a while to put it all in, guessing at how much of each
    thing I ate.

I'll tell you, the WW web site is starting to tick me off! I just
went to look, and it says I had 13 points left that day! I know I put
about 35 points in for dinner alone. It was a real hit to the flex
points. Right now, it only shows 10.5 points for the turkey. ARGGGH!
I want to find their webmaster and punch him in the nose. The real
aggravation is that it threw out my activity points, and I had earned
    5 of them that day!

I have no idea where I stand for the week now. Okay, I have nothing
good left to say, so I'll just stop here.

  18. Hi Joyce,

I agree about Christmas. In the past, I've always had candy dishes around the house filled with
peanut M & M/s, peanut butter cups, choc cherries....anything that is my favorite. This year I
bought mini 3 muskateers and gum drops to put in them...and not as many. We had a dish of candy out
after Halloween with left overs. It was a temptation every time I walked past it. I did okay not
taking much...my daughter and husband cleaned it out in about a week. It is odd the way even people
without a weight problem will overeat if the food is just "there."

  19. For me #1 and #2 are very close. After being on WW for 6 months now I don't know how to "pig" out
anymore. My stomach has shrunk and I seem to only make good choices in what I eat. Tonight we went
to a street fair. I went with the intention of splurging on a cheeseburger. I ended up with a
chicken and shrimp green salad. I just can't seem to make bad choice anymore. Tomorrow's buffet will
    be the real test.<g>

  20. I liked those thoughts, Suzy...it shows how easy it is to succeed on WW, and how a single thought
can be the defeat. The "all or nothing mentality" is what makes a lot of diets fail. i.e. "I've
blown it today, so I may as well forget it." or "I couldn't stick to it today, so I'm a failure and
    will never lose weight."

Your thoughts show how we need to restructure our thinking for success instead of failure. Thanks
    for the reminder.
