I feel that timing doping scandals to coincide with the TdF is detrimental to the credibility of the sport and public interest. These things quickly degrade to a he-said, she-said affair of fingerpointing and nothing else, simply because they mostly deal with events that happened long ago. I'm just sick and tired of hearing about it.
At this point, I am of the opinion that many more than not throughout the past 25 years that I've kept up with the sport have used banned substances at one time or another. Some will be caught, some will confess, others will forever keep their secrets to themselves. At this point, most of this is now so far after the fact that I no longer care. So many have either been caught or confessed (Riis, Ullrich, Pantani, etc. and so forth) that I can't imagine all the asterisks that would have to be added to the history books. For all I know, Pantani had a big snort of cocaine halfway up the Ventoux years ago, and I wouldn't care if he did at this point (not that anyone could prove it one way or another in 2010). Whenever I watch Lemond struggle in video clips of his later years, I can't help but wonder if he was losing his edge at least partly because of widespread EPO users. My understanding is that even Fignon admits to some naughty doing in his book, so nothing in the past seems verifiably clean.
If anything positive can come of this tabloid grade noise, I hope it demonstrates that the cats hold the upper hand in the cat and mouse game. So far, there have been no positive drug test in this TdF, and that's all I care about at this point. As for what he did or she did years ago, I just don't give a damn so long after the fact and wish it would all evaporate.
