  1. Well, not QUITE hopeless........since if I felt entirely hopeless I wouldn't be posting here at all.

I have a chronic illness which doesn't allow me to do much in the way of exercise, as it causes me
to have much more pain and fatigue than I can handle. I try to do 20 minutes on the treadmill every
other day or so. Two months ago I broke my ankle and have not been able to do anything.......that,
coupled with plying myself with "comfort" foods to get through the frustration of being
incapacitated has caused a big weight gain. I have not been back to ww for an official weigh -in but
my home scale shows about a 10-15 lbs gain! Yes. I KNOW that chocolate doesn't really help the pain
and swelling of an ankle injury.....but of course I HAD to give it a try!

The Doc said I could try going back on the treadmill, but then I got the flu and have been too sick
to do it. But NOT too sick to EAT whatever I feel like! Each day I PLAN to write down my points and
each day I DON'T. I feel miserable, partake of the "comfort" foods, then feel depressed because I
can't exercise and can't seem to curb my eating. I am desperate to get back on my healthy eating
plan and lose the newly gained lbs.......but just can't seem to do it.

The only reason I don't feel completely hopeless is because I know that you all are here ready to
offer support and that if I just get back on here reading and posting that I CAN find the motivation
to get going again. It looks grim to me now......but I know I can turn it around, and with your
    help, succeed.

I will commit to reading and posting everyday, joining the NYNY challenge, the HHH challenge, and
Journaling my points daily as well. I'll go back to WW for an official Weigh-in tomorrow. That
sounds like a tough order given my mind state at the moment, but I know from past experience that if
I ACT motivated, I can actually BECOME motivated!

Thank you all for being here and letting me ramble on,

Billie (who is changing HOPEless to HOPEful even as we speak)

  2. You've made a great start already! As FlyLady (the de-cluttering/cleaning guru) says - you are not
behind! Just jump in where you are! (watch your ankle when you jump <G>😉

    Posting here is a wonderful start. You already know you'll find support and help. Here's a {{{hug}}}
to feel you better (as my Miss Fussy Rose likes to say).

  3. Here's a big hug for you Billie. You have certainly had a bit of a rough time but I hope you're
over the flue by now & have at least that behind you. I know it's very hard to be OP when you
are constantly in pain and you must try your best as the excess weight will only cause more
problems & more depression. Hopefully, we will be able to help keep you motivated. Wish you all
    the best. Elaine K

  4. You've come to the right place! Cry on our shoulder whenever you need to.

Suggestion: Start out with doing 5 minutes on the treadmill the first day, or second and third and
fourth. Then increase to 10 minutes and keep increasing as you feel like it. Even if you increase
just a minute or two each time, pretty soon you'll be doing more and more.

I've been reading up on exercise and stuff. 20 minutes 3 times a week is great. A nice addition is
to do 'interval' training. Instead of doing 20 minutes at one level, try to do a minute at an easy
pace, then a minute a bit harder, then go back to easy, then harder. Not only does it make the time
go quicker but also it's supposed to be more effective and burn fat for longer. If you can go a
little bit longer than 20 minutes, then so much the better. Try doing 1 more minute, then as that
becomes easier try 2 minutes etc. Be aware that after a couple of weeks off you may have to back off
a bit to get back into the swing of things.

Is there any other form of exercise you can do? Swimming is very low impact. What about getting a
set of dumbells? Sounds silly but actually works really well.

Journalling is the best thing, and take measurements every week. Plot your weight, your points and
your exercise time in excel and you'll see your weight come down over time.

  7. Billie,

Great start to a new attitude!!

I have talked to other people who have had trouble with exercise, either because of excess weight or
bad knees, legs etc..., and they found that doing an aerobic tape while sitting in a straight backed
chair worked wonderfully. You obviously couldn't do everything they do but you could certainly move
your legs in the walking motion--without the impact on your ankle--and move your arms in the motions
they do. Many people have found this was a great way to start until they were down to a weight that
would allow them to be up moving or their knees and legs healed properly. Something to try if you
    have videos to workout to!!

You can do this!! Come here for support often!!

  9. Welcome aboard. I'm sure you'll figure out the right exercise program for you. BTW, my first 15
pounds were lost without adding any exercise to my daily routine. You can follow the WW plan without
adding exercise if you are not able to do it because of your ankle.

UGH! BTDT! I have fibromyalgia, and while it isn't crippling, it can be a severe pain in the joints

Plying yourself with chocolate can be beneficial, so long as you can just make do with a square or
two, not a whole 12 oz bar! And a broken ankle is as good an excuse as any!

UGH! Flue is like that and just makes you feel like you are in a black fog and the only answer is a
whole packet of chocolate chip cookies! take it gently with the treadmill, and don't forget to do
the exercises the physioterrorist gives you as well!

The only reason I don't feel completely hopeless is because I know that you all are here ready to
offer support and that if I just get back on here reading and posting that I CAN find the
motivation to get going again. It looks grim to me now......but I know I can turn it around, and
    with your help, succeed.

Excellent attitude! Well done, and yes, we're here to help and encourage you all the way.

I will commit to reading and posting everyday, joining the NYNY challenge, the HHH challenge, and
Journaling my points daily as well. I'll go back to WW for an official Weigh-in tomorrow. That
sounds like a tough order given my mind state at the moment, but I know from past experience that
if I ACT motivated, I can actually BECOME motivated!

    Coo! Well done again!

Sorry about your ankle Billie. Best of luck getting back on track. Keep us updated on how

  13. Thanks Everyone for all the HUGS and support........

I crawled....well, actually, hobbled, back to WW this morning and got the official total gained
during my 2 month absence......7.4, which was NOT the 10-15 lbs. I had expected......So a big
    YAY to that!

I feel thoroughly back on track, eating on points and even did a 10 minute trial on the treadmill
with no ill effects on my ankle so far. I will sign up today for the challenges and look forward to
    a great week!

Thanks again to all of you who posted to me, I know it is helping me regain my positive attitude.

  14. My mother does this kind of exercise. The Arthritis foundation has many places with this type of
exercise class. She uses dumbbells and weights. Some of the people in her class stand up during many
parts of the program but my mother can not walk unassisted so she does them sitting down.

    Billie,

Great start to a new attitude!!

I have talked to other people who have had trouble with exercise, either because of excess weight
or bad knees, legs etc..., and they found that doing an aerobic tape while sitting in a straight
backed chair worked wonderfully. You obviously couldn't do everything they do but you could
certainly move your legs in the walking motion--without the impact on your ankle--and move your
arms in the motions they do. Many people have found this was a great way to start until they were
down to a weight that would allow them to be up moving or their knees and legs healed properly.
Something to try if you have videos to workout to!!

You can do this!! Come here for support often!!

Well, not QUITE hopeless........since if I felt entirely hopeless I wouldn't be posting here
    at all.

I have a chronic illness which doesn't allow me to do much in the way of exercise, as it causes
me to have much more pain and fatigue than I can handle. I try to do 20 minutes on the treadmill
every other day or so. Two months ago I broke my ankle and have not been able to do
anything.......that, coupled with plying myself with "comfort" foods to get through the
frustration of being incapacitated has caused a big weight gain. I have not been back to ww for
an official weigh -in but my home scale shows about a 10-15 lbs gain! Yes. I KNOW that chocolate
doesn't really help the pain and swelling of an ankle injury.....but of course I HAD to give it
    a try!

The Doc said I could try going back on the treadmill, but then I got the flu and have been too
sick to do it. But NOT too sick to EAT whatever I feel like! Each day I PLAN to write down my
points and each day I DON'T. I feel miserable, partake of the "comfort" foods, then feel
depressed because I can't exercise and can't seem to curb my eating. I am desperate to get back
on my healthy eating plan and lose the newly gained lbs.......but just can't seem to do it.

It's the pits, that Fibro! Today I feel like my elbows are coming unscrewed!

Glad to hear you were up less than you thought. I was warned against doing high impact stuff, so my
exercise is my daily brisk 2 mile walk, to collect my son from school. I need well padded shoe soles
for this - looks like I will be shoe hunting in the sales after Christmas, as the present ones are a
bit worn! I just wish the local swimming pool was a nice one, so I could go swimming!

  20. Missed your original follow-up post, Billie. I just wanted to say I'm so glad you got back to WW for
a weigh-in. That's how I felt last week at Curves after not weighing in there since June. *sigh*
Hang in there, you'll get those pounds back off again soon!
