I've noticed a bit more flex in mine as compared to normal alloy stems. I don't think this translates into much power loss though, just a different and more compliant feel. You're definitely right about the $$ factor - If you're cool with putting down an extra 25% or more on the part, go or it. I'd check out the new bontrager carbon stems if you are in the market - they look awesome and are ROCK solid.

I have a carbon Pro Vibe stem and bar.

Other than being a little trendy (like white components and tape) it's just a stem and feels just as sturdy as any other stem I have used.

Since you just want some more carbon-bling, consider getting the FSA stem which has a carbon face plate ... the stem, itself, is aluminum.
