a bit loose. A friend who knows about these things told me it's
actually the bottom bracket that's worn. So after visiting several LBS
and being told that they couldn't do anything I finally found one who
was prepared to take a look. He took it apart and then just put it
back together again (for no charge). Apparently it's something to do
with the mix of parts from different manufacturers and he couldn't fix
it. To be honest I didn't really understand what he was trying to
explain.
Does anyone have any ideas to solve this or anywhere in London I can
take this to be looked at? Cos I'm a little reluctant to throw the
whole bike away just cos of a worn out bottom bracket.
It's not going to be possible to answer this without knowing what the
problem is in greater detail, I'm afraid. At very least, you will need
to describe the components fitted to the bike. It's pretty certain that
the bike will have an Italian threaded bottom bracket (36 x 24F), which
makes things a bit less simple.
Can you perhaps post some photos somewhere, together with *precisely*
what the shop mechanics said, as far as you understood it? Was it more
a case of, "it can't be done for less than...£[censored]", because that would
make more sense to me. They may well be absolutely right if that's what
they've said.
One possibility is that the thread in the bottom bracket shell has
become damaged - this was more common with Italian BBs, since the RH
cup is right threaded, and comes undone more readily as a result -
which will be expensive to fix, and possibly not worth doing if the
frame is on its last legs.

crrrrrrazy!!
Using a proper newsreader fixes that - filtering out yahoo.com.cn seems
to reduce it nicely for me at the moment.
