  1. A pair of Aztec brake blocks I bought in November have been very poor.

They offered no grip on the rear rim, but they're OK on the front (they
    are slightly different rims).

Despite providing little evidence of friction onthe rear, they wore down
really fast, and a metal piece inside the block has scored the rim.

Can you recommend some other block types or brands, for a road bike?

    Thanks,

    Daniele

Go for a cartridge system where you can replace the rubber bit without
changing the metal bits. Works out cheaper and wastes less stuff. Also
quicker and easier coz you don't have to fiddle around lining the blocks up
when you change them. I started with an Aztec set but although they worked
OK I was bothered by the way they seemed to wear the rims down very quickly,
so now I'm trying Kool Stop dual compound pads, which happily fit in the
Aztec holders. My jury is still out because they are very smooth and grippy
but the front tends to judder at very low speeds like when I've almost come
    to a stop.

I wonder if there's a mixture of grit and chain lube on the rear rim,
hence the lack of friction and rapid wear. Or are you just expecting
too much of the rear brake, which isn't good for much anyway?

Kool Stops. I use Kool Stop Salmons i.e. pinky orange compound on my
tourer. They served two purposes - the elimination of brake squeal and
    improved brake performance.

  5. I haved used these brakes blocks as well, dont recommend them either.
Use Shimano blocks now, these are much better.

Better if you want to replace rims almost as often as you replace brake
    blocks, you mean?

Kool Stop Salmons - ignore the 'they're for the wet' bit and enjoy.
