Bottom Bracket problem

  1. On the way home Fri evening there was some obvious movement in the
    right crank. When I checked the bolt today it was tight so I removed
    the crank and found this:

    In case it is not obvious the shaft is now in two pieces!

    I need a gizmo for removing the BB. Wiggle have this thing:

    which apears to have the correct number of splines.

    Can somebody please advise is that the tool I need and what
    replacement BB should I get. The bike is a very tired old hybrid that
    has survived over 50000 mile and only needs to keep going until Aug
    which is when my commuting will come to an end.

    Advance thanks to anyone who can help - this is unfamiliar territory
    for me.

    Oh, and is this a common problem?

    It will be fine and will fit a socket wrench of the right size.

    Snapped BB shaft? Happens, but rarely.

    On the photo, the circular bit behind the shaft (the shiny bit, and not the
    one outside the splines) is showing a fair amount of damage - any idea how
    that happened?

    seems to be a fair bit cheaper than the shimano one. Or there's a cheaper
    shimano one too. Though the one you mentioned does appear to have a socket
    (1/2" at a guess) which could be more useful to you than a bit spanner
    fitting (is to me).

    might be worth a look. It's what I'd get. Remember the chainwheel side is LH
    threaded.

    For a new BB, I'd just get a shimano un-50something (53 or 54). You'll need
    to work out which length you need - width of your BB (probably 68mm), and
    length of the shaft. 2 quid cheaper at chain reaction than wiggle, and free
    post too :-)

    OK, others have given good advice regarding tools and new BB.

    When you remove the old one it's very likely that the Left side has a
    right hand thread and the right side a left hand thread.

    I have ordered a tool, one with a big handle, I think this will be a
    struggle to get off even if I turn it in the correct direction 🙂 The
    width of the BB is indeed 68mm so all I need to know now is the length
    of the shaft. Problem is I can't remove the left crank, it's well and
    truly stuck. (I tried heat - lots of heat) I need to remove the whole
    assembly and put it in the vice then I can give it a bit of extra
    encouragement.

    I tried measuring the shaft by poking a bolt down the hole in the
    crank and then put the vernier over the bolt and with the broken bit
    of shaft held in place I get a measurement of about 115mm after
    subtracting the bolt length. This leads me to:

    Where we see that the 68 X 115mm is out of stock but what does the BS
    stand for? Also if I buy the 113mm which is in stock could the
    difference be taken up by adjusting the front mech? The 113mm is BS
    and triple - I have a triple chain set what is the 115mm then?

    Hmm. removing the whole assembly without being able to get the tool to
    the splines might be a bit of a challenge.

    Try Plus Gas (tm) and leave it for 24 hours. WD40 and similar things
    are not the same.

    If it is really really stuck, you could hack saw through the axle, as
    the BB is stuffed anyway.

    on it, with the dimensions.

    At a guess British Standard (thread). That page also lists IT for
    Italian thread, which is a different pitch and has both cups with a
    right hand thread.

    My experience hasbeen that Shimano BBs are symmetrical, so from 113mm
    to 115mm only adds 1mm either side. Try adjusting your front mech
    with the existing BB in place to see if you can bring it in by 1mm.

    Just another axle length. Different chain sets have different axle
    length requirements.

  8. I too am in the process of removing a worn out BB (30000 miles so no
    complaints there) and I have a BB remover but it only seems to fit the
    metal side of the new BB and the old one but not the plastic side, not
    even close......
    The plastic sleeve on the other side doesn't need a different tool
    does it? Not seen anything like that mentioned.

    Possibly needs different tool (or brute force and big vice). There are a
    lot of different bottom bracket tools; the Shimano pattern is perhaps the
    most common. Campag (now old taper type) have a different one. I expect TA
    are different again. etc...

    If just removing old parts which will need a special tool, if its possible
    to grip the BB in a vice and turn the frame round (remembering which side
    has RH and LH threads).

    Assuming you're talking about a Shimano-type splined tool, sometimes the
    plastic cup can become compressed on installation. A tap or two from a
    mallet will usually get the tool to engage.

    Oh dear! it's getting embarrasing now. I thought that as the crank was
    so loose relative to the left crank it must be easy to get off once
    the bolt was removed. Just ease it off with a big screwdriver.

    Ok a bigger screwdriver. Then a big cold chisel. Then chisel and
    hammer. Then chisel and club hammer..... you know the rest.

    Mmm - would this explain the bust shaft then? :-)

    FWIW if you've knackered the pulling threads, and can afford a BB more than
    the cranks, a cutting blade on an angle grinder works well - I found a 9"
    one was required to get the clearance. Requires sufficient space between the
    crank and the BB though. Having done that, knock the stub out of the cranks,
    and set to the BB with conventional tools.

    You didn't mention knackered extractor threads. :-)
    FWIW I'm pretty handy with the brute force and ignorance myself - either
    knocking the axle through if the bottom bracket is loose, or prying the
    crank off (a fork-type balljoint splitter can work well) although you
    can also make or adapt a puller that goes around the back of the crank
    rather than using the extractor threads. And there's always the
    hacksaw/angle grinder/oxy-acetylene route ...
