  1. So I can't run much cos I weigh more, nude (just ask me), than I did with
a week's provisions in a rucksack for the sand marathon. Plus the day's
water rations. On each thigh. Bleah.

I need help on a number of matters:

    a) how can I definitively stop drinking alcohol? Really (trick question).

    b) when you're chatting with a white babe who doesn't run, what do you do
when a black babe (who runs AND looks like Diana Ross, or Halle Berry,
or... well you see my drift) suddenly comes online after months of
avoiding you? (OK so this is a weird, froggy/limey fantasy - live with it.
    I have to)

    c) how do you prove to your terminally silly wife (and a large slice of
the r.r audience) that point b) was British humour?

    d) How can you get to meet american running babes (don't worry Donald ;-)
    without flying?

    e) Am I gay because I think Johnny Depp is cool?

    f) Am I gay because I think the Elf is getting to be pretty cool a lot of
    the time?

    g) Do any of you have experience of a broken toe which still hurts into
the 4th month after the injury?

    h) Do you need a life more than I do ? (I know this one)

    i) Do you know of any good races in NY (C rather than state) around Easter
    2008?

    j) where can you get a decent pizza?

Are you limeys that stupid? See an american would immediately know

Yeah, that's harsh. I'm just getting back into running myself after a
very frustrating almost completely run-free couple months (illness,
then some random hamstring thing from out of the blue). My scale says
I only picked up one kg but my jeans say otherwise.

It's maddening to have worked up to joe positive mileage in the
spring, run some Dan Stumpus mileage in the early fall, and now find
myself a minute per mile slower on a 4 miler - *and* incur DOMS from
    it. Geez.

I feel some of your pain.

    Quoted message said:

    a) how can I definitively stop drinking alcohol? Really (trick question).

    Can't help you there.

Then again I don't know that you'd get much helpful running advice
from AA or other groups with millions of man-years real world
experience of getting people to definitively stop drinking alcohol.

Can't help. But I'm curious: which one's the froggy and which is the
    limey?

    e) Am I gay because I think Johnny Depp is cool?

    f) Am I gay because I think the Elf is getting to be pretty cool a lot of

It's exceedingly unlikely either of those causes your homosexuality,
and frankly I'm surprised you'd blame it on them. I always considered
    you more objective than that.

    Quoted message said:

    g) Do any of you have experience of a broken toe which still hurts into
the 4th month after the injury?

    Can't help.

    Quoted message said:

    h) Do you need a life more than I do ?

    More? Eh, probably not.

    Quoted message said:

    i) Do you know of any good races in NY (C rather than state) around Easter
    2008?

Don't worry; everyone knows that NY is the C, unless one says e.g.
"New York STATE" or "the STATE of New York" or "upstate". No
disrespect intended - outside of much of Long Island and the city of
Syracuse, it's a beautiful state. But "New York" without additional
context means the city of New York. (And "the city", as used by many
New Yorkers, narrows the context specifically to Manhattan; e.g.
Staten Islanders - technically residents of the city of New York -
will decide whether to drive or take the ferry into "the city". There
was also a good film called La Ciudad [http://www.imdb.com/title/
    tt0168589 or http://www.pbs.org/itvs/thecity/film.html] but that
    didn't mean just Manhattan.)

But can't help. NYRR doesn't seem to have published their 2008
schedule, and I'm too lazy to look up anything else, like when is
Easter, other local calendars, etc. Rest assured if you're around
here, around then, there'll be something somewhere. And Doug will
chime in soon suggesting you, and anyone else with or without legs,
consider the HAT 50k which is some time in spring and somewhere on the
    eastern seaboard, I think.

What's your criteria for a "good" race anyhow?

    Quoted message said:

    j) where can you get a decent pizza?

Absolutely correct, Avenue J! Well done. DiFara's on J is the best
in North America. If he's still open; I seem to recall hearing of him
being shut down once or twice earlier this year by the health
department. I haven't gotten out that way in quite some time nor
    followed the news.

Closer to you, I understand there are some pretty good options in
    Italy.

Definitely let me know if you come to NYC to race, while you're
recovering from injury, slightly overweight - and not at your best,
I'd love to enter a race with you here on my home turf and kick your
    ass while you're down.

Yeah, we could have an intriguing matchup.

lance has taken a big step up.

Donovan's time and focus has apparently been elsewhere.

steve's got a ways to go to regain his prior form.

I've taken a few steps back but am fairly likely to put in some decent
training between now and then, body willing.

Could be a lot more interesting than it would've been a couple years
    ago!

    . . .

Quotes below are from this site:
    http://www.engin.umich.edu/class/bme456/bonefracture/bonefracture.htm

:: ...there are three distinct phases of fracture healing: 1) inflammation,
:: 2) reparation, and 3) remodeling. The first phase, inflammation,
:: occurs immediately following the bone fracture. At that time, a
:: hematoma or blood clot occurs at the fracture site. This hematoma
:: provides two important factors important for fracture healing. First,
:: the hematoma provides a small amount of mechanical stability to the
:: fracture site. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the hematoma
:: brings osteoblast, and chondrocyte precursors to the fracture site in
:: large numbers that can begin to differentiate into osteoblasts and
:: chondrocytes to begin producing matrix. In addition, macrophages and
:: osteoclasts come into the site to remove damaged and necrotic tissue.
:: Also, since bone fracture usually involves disruption of the
:: periosteum surrounding the bone, more precursor cells from the
:: periosteum will be introduced into the fracture site. The will begin
:: the process of making a fracture callus through the general process of
:: osteogenesis, laying down bone on soft tissue. Both types of
:: osteogenesis, intramembranous and endochondral ossification may be
:: occuring at the fracture site. The resulting proliferation of woven ::
:: bone tissue will produce a fracture callus, bridging the fracture gap.
    ::
:: The second step in the biology of fracture healing is the
:: reparation phase. In this phase, the processes of osteogenesis
:: continue and a fracture callus bridges the fracture site.
:: . . . The healed bony callus is formed of woven bone
    :: and primary bone. At
:: this point, it consists of a large bony bridge connecting the two
:: bones. The base material of the callus typically will have lower
:: strength and stiffness than mature lamellar bone. It is the large mass
:: of bone in the callus that gives the construct its strength. To reduce
:: the callus mass while maintaining mechanical integrity the callus must
:: be remodeled to produce the lamellar bone. During the remodeling
:: period, the large fracture callus is reduced to become the size of the
:: bone at the fracture site. The woven/primary bone is replaced with
:: secondary lamellar bone. This process may take months or even up to a
:: year or more in adults.

A year or more in adults. Oh, and while it happens, there will be
discomfort: the periosteum, the interosseous membranes, the places
where tendons adhere, are all growing / re-growing. For a long time.

    Good luck!
