1. I've been riding Bontrager Race Lite, Dual Compound tires. This season, for some reason, I seem to be getting an extraordinary number of flats. I weigh about 205 pounds, ride a 2006 Trek 5200 OCLV, and have two questions:

    1. How many miles should I expect to get from my tires?
    2. Does anyone have suggestions about other tires I might consider?

    Thank you for help.

  2. I am riding Conti 4000's. I rotate the front to the back, so the front tire is always the newest. I get about 2500-3000 miles on the back. Only one flat this year and I rode about 5000 miles. Hope that helps.

  3. Are you getting pinch flats or flats from objects in the road? Pinch flats are almost always low-pressure related.

Make sure the rim tape is good and not causing the problem, I ride the same bike and have had this happen to me.

I recently had the same problem (coincidentally, also running Bontragers). Eventually I tracked down the culprit - a tiny sliver of glass embedded in the tyre. It was so small that when the tyre was off the wheel the glass just diappeared back inside the tyre material! But clearly, with every rotation it would be pushed out into the inner tube, eventually puncturing it.

The standard 'fingers around the inside' search approach didn't track down the troublemaker. It took a determined close inspection of the outside of the tyre, including bending the tyre to open EVERY slot between every tread lug!

I get about 2000 miles out of my Bontragers (and I rotate front to rear to even up wear).

  6. Thanks for all of your replies. I'm sure it's neither a pinch nor inflation problem. I'll definitely check my tape. And I'll try the Contis, as well. 2,500 to 3,000 miles is close to twice what I've been getting from the Bontragers.

That's what I got this summer from my Michelin Pro 2 Races, at just under 200 lbs.. Except without the flats. Great tires.

Same here for the life on the Conti 4000s....2800-3K miles on the rear. The tread seems very puncture-resistant, but I've had a couple of sidewall cut-throughs in the last 15K miles that caused me to toss out two of them early.

For riding on clean roads, Conti or ProRace tires are well worth the money in terms of wear life, ride and low rolling resistance. Conti and Michelin both make tires with even longer life and better sidewall protection if road conditions dictate something tougher.

  9. With a little help from my friends, I stopped at a bike shop on my way to a meeting yesterday. The Conti 4000s turned out be the most popular tire in the place. I put them on last night and hope to road test them today. For tougher conditions, the Conti Grand Prix 4-Season tire looks good, too.

    Thanks again.
