I am hoping to do an Ironman in 2005. Biking will be my biggest challenge. Which Ironman has the
flattest bike route? I am not worried about the marathon on hills, just the biking.

Two small hills on each lap - pretty damn flat.

I have done many absolute flat 120 mile rides and yes, while faster than a hilly course they are
extremely tiring. Always get off the bike with a sore muscles and back from the constant use of the
same muscle group with no break in effort level. I would rather have a few hills, actually, a lot of
hills suits me better.Ken "Rick (Saga 35)" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

There was a web site with all IM elevation maps...I can't find it. Thought it was provided by
IM itself.MK

IM florida, it has exactly 2 hills, the bridge on the outbound, then you go over it agian on the way
home. the run has zero elevation gain.Brent

Thanks for all the replies. I hadn't thought about the variety (muscle relaxing) that a little hill
climbing/descending provides.Rick

I'd heard people say this, and although I haven't done any long bike rides on flat courses I think I
have to agree. I was forced to do two long (17-18 mi) runs on a dead flat course last summer, and I
was a lot more sore than normal. You end up using the same muscles nonstop when it's flat; some
hills let you change things up and stay fresher.--Harold Buck

Australia and NZ are pretty flat. Always fast times there.

I agree 100% .
I train in flat coastal Georgia and would much rather race on a course with hills. When I go out for
a 2 hour ride here, I'm working the whole time. No coasting, no relaxing downhill. The same muscles,
all the time.Just for the sake of discussion....
Who has a "easier" timer of it - flatlanders on a hilly course or hill-riders on a flat course?
There's a different psychology for each type of course.

For future reference, you can access this through the bike map webpage of most IMNA races.

The site also has run course comparisons.
For some reason this little chart doesn't work with Netscape 7.0, works fine with IE though.

While I have to agree (done it a few times) that IMFL is one of the flatter courses out there, it's
not completely flat. After all is said and done I bet you do close to 700-900' of climbing. I'm
going to map this out sometime on topo or use a local gis system to find out for sure.Oh, and you're wrong. The run has gain and loss. I'll tell what that is at some time also. Find me a
26.2m course that's not on a track or treadmill that really has zero elevation gain and I'll be
impressed.-Andrew

Chesapeake Man - October 8, 2004 at the site of the Blackwater Eagleman Triathlon in Cambridge,
Maryland. It will undoubtedly be flatter than IM Florida, and probably be the flattest there can
possibly be, other than perhaps the Espirit Triathlon - which is a crit style ironman distance
race around a lake somewhere above the northern US border. For M-dot races, though, IM Florida
would be my guess.See you at Chesapeake Man.

I can almost assure you that the New Ironman Western Australia will be a Super fast bike course.
ironmanwa.comironmanwa.comOpen ↗ BIKE - 180.1km (3 x 60km laps) Looking for a fast bike course? Well here
it is! 3 x 60km loops on flat, fast roads protected by winds and on a great surface. The bike leg
makes its way through the majestic old growth Ludlow Tuart Forest National Park (the largest old
growth Tuart forest in the world) and will be lined with spectators. This is a great course for
family and friends with many vantage points to view all the action.Harold Buck <[email hidden]> wrote in message
