OT: aioe.org

Thanks to the folks who suggested aioe.org for a news server, I finally feel
like I've got my Usenet "life" back...I can read this froup without going to
Google and WADING through all that spam...Google is on the verge of being
fairly unusable...I like their service but they REALLY need to get a handle
on the spam problem.

Earthlink's server has been "inactive" for about a month, there are no new
downloads EXCEPT on ba.food and chi.eats...go figger. I can post from EL's
server, but it's pretty useless not having anything to *reply* to, lol. A
whiles back I got an announcement from EL about their "new and enhanced
Usenet service!" but surely that was some kind of joke. Just saw that EL is
slashing it's workforce in half (from 1900 to 900) and closing a bunch of
offices, so I'll wait with baited breath on THAT...

I'm very pleased with aioe.org, at least for the time being, so thanks
again...it's LUVERLY not to see the MI5, Nike, Craigslist World's Best
Hostels, Chung, Muzlim, etc. crapola.

I see the weather down by you is cooler, it's about time. Sunny, lovely,
and LOW HUMIDITY here...

I am on a jag making things for various "do's" this weekend, e.g 10 lbs. of
tater salad, 6 lbs. of cole slaw, a coupla dishes of baked beans, and some
peanut noodles (everything made from scratch)...this is pretty much the last
spurt of such summertime cooking, after this it'll be Crockpot City with
autumnal foods. I'm thinking of things like sauerbraten, etc...

I use and like aioe.org. Motzarella is another good free one (haven't tried
crossposting yet )
www.motzarella.org, requires sign up , but is free.

Back in the day Earthlink was the best of the best. I was with
Mindspring when they shifted to Earthlink.

I have read many negative things about the new EL.

You might want to try a pay server. It is only 3 bucks per month. I
like this one:

It offers a pretty good deal on the binary groups. When you get
addicted to the binary groups, you can always upgrade to more.

aloe has no binary access.

I'll check it out. I like to see the pics in ABF and most freebies don't
allow it. My ISP is Charter and they have farmed Usenet out to a 3rd
party and they suck big time. I always like to connect to the freebies
when the usual monthy Charter crisis hits. Thanks.

I think Charter has about the best "free" Usenet server around. The
downside to Charter is they cap their download speed. Comcast and
others give you a fast channel, but the messages are incomplete and
fall off the server pretty fast.

Charter's server is slow, but pretty darn reliable.

I'm using EL right now, and newsgroup access seems to be working just
fine. They did reconfigure their usenet feed recently. Essentially,
they gave up on managing their own server farm. They are now
outsourcing, using Supernews (one of the largest services that
specializes in usenet).

Check your server settings, and make sure you are using one of the
following:

news.west.earthlink.net
news.east.earthlink.net
demonews.mindspring.com
nntp.earthlink.net

All these should resolve to

earthlink.vsrv-sjc.supernews.net

The change is mostly an improvement for me. Article retention seems
vastly better than on the formerly-used Earthlink servers. Download
speed appears to be throttled, but the rate limit will probably matter
only to users who download really large binaries.

I have other gripes about Earthlink, and concerns about their
survivability. But newsgroups are not a problem here (Seattle).

Our menus for Labor Day weekend are similar, with the exception of
peanut noodles (have never made that before). I made vanilla ice cream
today and it is delicious.

Hmmm...that sounds good, I'll keep that in mind for *next* summer. That
would be real hit with our crowd, we don't usually do much of anything for
dessert except maybe brownies.

In fact an ice cream maker might be a nice gift for the two gals who are
hosting today's party, they entertain a lot in the summer. Thanks for the
"suggestion"...

I got a good 10 - hour's sleep after yesterday's cooking marathon here in
the "commissary", e.g 12 lbs of potato salad, 10 or coleslaw, two casseroles
of baked beans (I use Bush's and goose them up). Peanut noodles will be
made tomorrow moring for the 'do' at our corner, and I'm just about to start
shucking 30 ears of corn (which I don't consider a chore, it's kinda
therapeutic actually).

There is never a good reason to crosspost... crossposters are mentally
ill because they are only interested in seeing their name appear in as
many places as possible and with the least effort on their part, they
are very sick sickos. Cross posters are far more douchebaggedy than
spammers. Actually what some/many of yoose newbies refer to as
spammers are not, they are crossposters. I use google news and like
it. Google would be much better however if they didn't support
crossposting. I see very little spamming, practically none...
recently only one jerkoff claiming to be an arborist who infects
rec.gardening. I seriously doubt that any of you even know the
definition of spam (which is what indicates that you're newbies).
Spam rarely occurs as usenet posts, spam is almost entirely associated
with email. The only spammers I see in Newsgroups are those posters
who include some sort of ad in their sig lines... even though those
[censored] are regular posters they are most definitely spammers...
"regularly occuring" being the most important element that it's spam.
I have far more respect for legit spammers than I do crossposters.
Crossposters are the real scourge of usenet. Spammers go away when
ignored, crossposters are a forever self proliferating cancer. All
the garbage OT threads are crossposted sewerage, none are spam. The
very best place for rfc crossposters is in the rfc memoriam.

the groups you want to convey a message to. First thing that comes to mind
immediately was the pet food recall. The message was sent across several
groups in a minimal amount of time and greatly appreciated by the posters

Go with giganews, which carries binaries and is reliable enough for
our purposes and do further research later. Please don't abuse
aioe.org or it may not stay free. I'd use aioe.org when I'm up at my
