  1. Well, my chicory arrived today, and I brewed up a couple of cups.

First - it's a lot more soluble than coffee, so next time I'll use
    just half as much.

It came out very dark and even a little thick, but with some half and
half and a few drops of vanilla creme stevia, it was very rich and
welcome - especially since I haven't had any coffee since about mid-
June! I suspect the thickness comes from all the inulin fiber -
chicory is apparently stuffed with it.

are you boiling roasted chicory root or did you buy a mix of some sort?

i really like Dandyblend but I have to order it and always forget. It's
dandelion (with chicory root and other stuff), i think it's yummy 🙂
    http://dandyblend.com/index.htm

    here's waht's in it:
Ingredients Totally soluble extracts of roasted barley, rye, chicory root,
    dandelion root and beetroot.

Also, i was never a coffee drinker so I don't need it as a substitute for
anything, I just like it. The health food stores have all these different
natural coffe substitues, have you tried them?

I bought pure chicory, roasted and ground for a drip coffee maker from
communitycoffee.com. I brewed last night's batch in my coffee maker,
and then used a French press this morning (1 1/2 teaspoons for 10
ounces of water). I like my coffee light and sometimes sweetened, so
I added half and half and some stevia (second cup was vanilla creme
stevia drops). Admittedly, chicory tastes better sweetened. 🙂

There's a store about half a mile from my home that carries it, so I
stopped by to check it out. Unfortunately, two of the ingredients are
off limits for me - barley and rye. The rest - dandelion, beetroot
and chicory are okay. The other drawback is that it seems to be like
instant coffee, and I never developed a taste for instant.

For now, I'm happy with the pure chicory - smooth, rich and just a bit
of a bite to it. Tomorrow (or tonight!) I'll try just a teaspoon in
    the French press.

I was never a big coffee drinker - one cup in the morning, and usually
almost none on the weekends. What I like is tea, but I'm off that,
too - no coffee or acidy drinks. However, I've discovered rooibus
teas, and they're okay - not terrific, but okay.

All the other coffee substitutes I've seen have grains in them - so I
    can't use them.

Oh, and it may be a fluke - but so far, my BG number have been lower
than usual after a cup of chicory. I suspect it may be the inulin.

  4. Man, this thread makes me glad I'm not a coffee drinker! Never could stand
    the stuff.

I've been drinking coffee with chicory for 30 years. It's a staple in
North Carolina and Virginia. Luzianne brand (coffee/chicory blend) is
common and available in any grocery store here. Because the chicory
is more soluble it's economic also ... you only se about half as much
as with regular coffee. Mmmmmmmmm. Strong, robust and delicious.

I have been enjoying it so far! I think I've got the proportions
correct now - I put just one teaspoon in my French press, and fill
with 12 ounces of boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, then press and
pour. Add cream or coconut milk and some vanilla creme stevia drops.
It makes a very coffee-like drink - right consistency, dark, rich and
very good. At only a teaspoon a cup, the 12-ounce bag is going to
last a looooong time - and it only cost $2.29. Actually, I bought two
bags, and then there was a delay, so the company didn't charge for the
shipping. All I paid for 24 ounces of roasted, ready to brew chicory
was $4.58. The 24 ounces will be the equivalent of 144 servings - or
what would have been 4 1/2 pounds of coffee. That's a bargain!

I ordered mine from www.communitycoffee.com, but there are plenty of
websites that sell pure chicory, ready to brew.
