  1. I was out of milk to make a real crepe batter, so I put a little
butter in a pan and about 2ts of sugar and spread that around.
I laid a large, thin tortilla on top of that and dotted that with
Nutella, dulce de leche, and Townhouse morsels.

    http://i10.tinypic.com/62gywqd.jpg

The tortilla got nice and toasty, everything on top (inside) got
nice and gooey, and the sugar carmelized right as I rolled it up.
I topped it all off with frozen Cool Whip.

This wasn't gross at all. The carmelized tortilla worked perfect
    - great texture and not doughy at all. Molten goo, crunchy sweet
shell, all under a nice cool, fluffy topping. Not unlike an
    overgrown canolli.

I would use less filling next time - it was pretty rich. And ice
cream instead of Cool Whip, of course.

Those store bought tortillas taste disgusting! You can taste the
preservatives in them. No brand is any better.

Make your own and you'll be rewarded with a real tortilla taste.

I buy tortillas at large ethnic grocery markets. There seems to be at all
times 4-5 types/brands of tortillas without any preservatives at all. Also
for my personal preference, I prefer no oil, or as little as possible, which
    are generally available, also.

  5. When I was a kid, my mother would heat tortillas, then add butter, sugar
and cinnamon, then roll them up. When my children were little, I did
the same, but I used the microwave. I will still make it, when I feel
    the craving. Aren't tortillas great?

Yep...and people in Puerto Vallarta, etc....have been doing it for
years and years. Why do you think they love sopaipillas like we do?

You don't live in Texas. Where we get real tortillas made with
    lard, water, and [fortified] flour.

They also make fresh, hot tortillas in supermarkets. No preservatives or
    additives.

The ones they make and sell at the store here (HEB and Fiesta)
are all adulterated. We're lucky enough to have a an El Millagro
here in Austin. There's a few others spread out around the
country from what I hear. There;'s a few other places in town -
most of them do use dough conidtioners though.

And they're even better if you make 'em yourself. You absolutely
cannot compare store bought (from *any* store *anywhere* - and I have
access to a *huge* Mexican market in Santa Ana CA that makes them
on-site) to the stuff you make yourself: And they're not labor
    intensive.

@@@@@ Now You're Cooking! Export Format

    Flour Tortillas

    mexican

    2 cups flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 tablespoon shortening
    12 cup +/- water

In mixing bowl, stir together flour, salt and baking powder. Cut in
shortening until mixture resembles corn meal. Add water and mix until
dough can be gathered into a ball. Let dough rest 15 mins. Divide
dough into 12 portions; shape into balls. On a lightly floured
surface, roll each ball to a 7" round. Cook on ungreased skillet over
medium heat about 1 1/2 mins. per side or until lightly "blistered"
    brown.

    Thanks for the recipe.

Paula, the high school girl next door, would babysit my children, she is
Hispanic (60% of our population was (is?) Hispanic). Paula made
tortillas every day, and she swore that when she grew up, she would
never make tortillas again. Several years later, after she graduated
from college, I hired her as an employee at work, and she was still
    making flour tortillas.

I used to buy a bag of freshly made, hot tortillas just before I went to
check out. Would eat like half the bag before I got home.

Mary, I am also guilty of tortilla nibbling. They are nice and hot and
    they smell so good.
