  1. I'm going to have beets as a side dish with a pork steak for dinner. I hate
roasting beets...I never get the timing right and they're either over or
undercook when the meat is cooked. So I decided that since I wasn't doing
much I'd pre cook the beets while I watched a DVD...Decided to nuke them. I
trimed off all but 1/2 inch of the stems and cut off the root ends, poked
them with a fork to prevent explosions, put them on a plate and nuked them
for 10 minutes...figgering I'd be able to peel and reheat them come supper
    time.

Little did I know that beets just on a plate in the nuker would catch fire.
No real damage...just the remaing 1/2 inch of stems burnt off to complete
ash, a little smoke and some odor. No apparent damage to microwave, kitchen
or me. Just some beets on a plate sitting in some ash...and a funny smell.

If nuking beets please include some water is my warning to you all.
I hope the rest of my day goes better.

Have you tried steaming them in a pot?

depends on the microwave. I nuke whole potatoes and they come out
fine. But, my microwave has a special potato button and it senses the
moisture content. I think I may be able to use the function for
beets. I'll give it a try ....minus stalks.

Having tasted beets some years ago, I believe that you are most
fortunate that your beets incinerated and disappeared from this Earth.
It has to be better than actually eating them.

The trick is that all your beets are about the same size... no
    different if baking potatoes.

And there is no reason that roasted beets need to be done cooking at
any particular time. Roast the day before and cool in the fridge so
they are easier to peel, then slice and serve cold or reheat.

If you cut off the root end and poke them full of holes there is no
point because the beets will lose the juices/flavor you're attempting
to save by roasting, then you just may as well boil them... and if
you're going to boil fresh beets you just may as well buy canned.

That said I sowed my beet seeds a week ago and today they are up...
the beet tops are the best part.

Reminds me of the time that I tried to nuke some sliced red
sweet peppers. It was quite spectacular as the skin flashed and
burned! No real harm done but it was the last time!

Perhaps next time, they are cooked fine now. The nuker did a fine job
except for the ashes...only the leaf stems burnt.

Pan fried Chuck Eye steak along with brown rice and steamed tops from
four large beets tonight. You'd be proud of me, Sheldon, as I've
taught several friends the value of beet tops. I overheard one of the
farmers there once tell of beet tops being good, tried them next day
and have been enjoying them for about three years now.

I usually have so many beets I can't eat them all so I give a lot
away... but I keep all the beet tops. Chuck steak is another of my
    favorites.
