This is one time, I'm really glad I can't eat anything with wheat in it. So now we know there is one US distributor of this melamine tainted, food grade wheat gluten but the FDA won't disclose which company that is. How convenient. After all, we wouldn't want the public to be concerned enough to stop buying, would we? And wheat gluten is hidden in so many different food products as a filler... words fail me.

It was a pet food recall, Menu Foods out of Canada. Happened several weeks back. No reported problems of HUMAN food being tainted but that doesn't mean much at this point. Just an FYI.

You honestly have no brain at all, do you. Do you even read the posts you're responding to?
Sometimes I read your posts and wonder how the hell you come up with these responses of yours.
What is this consistent mental defect, anyway? What's the psychological term for this - anybody know? Scatterbrained?

Even if they revealed the name of the company, it probably wouldn't be of much use to us, unless they also revealed who the company sold the gluten to.

Some pet food company should start an advertising campaign, "Contains no ingredients from China." That is, if any of them can make that claim.

I'm fortunate in that I haven't had any pets affected by the recall. My cat doesn't eat the original "in gravy" food cited in the products from Menu Foods out of Canada. Then when Purina got into the dry food recall it wasn't her prescription formula. I keep a stock of it on hand anyway so it wasn't within the manufacture dates. I've NOT heard of any human food gluten products being affected, despite what SQWERTZ (posting under yet another of his many names which I keep killfiling, daily) seems to think.

I wonder how they'd be "not be able to determine if the company sold the gluten to human food manufacturers".
That has cover-up written all over it.
When I think of Del Monte, I think human food, not pet food. Heck, I used to live right under the huge Del Mote Can in Mountain View, CA (It was a water tower).

It has a George Carlin term written all over it: Pussification, in this case, of law enforcement.
You round up a CEO, and give him/her the choice of walking out to the unmarked car nicely, or being taken in handcuffs. He/she spends 48 hours in jail unless the company comes up with its customer list very fast. Twenty minutes would be about right.

Or, you say please, which is the wrong way.
There are still plenty of hard-ass cops out there too; they are busy executing no-knock raids on suspected drug users.
CEO's tend to be politically well-connected. Police chiefs are political animals. You can draw your own conclusions.

Had you read the cite, you'd know that "food grade" wheat gluten (ie food for HUMANS) from China has now been tracked down as the source of the problem. This is new information, not old news. Just an FYI.

I think you mean the Libby can.
Yeah. That one ;-) Del Monte was San Francisco and Santa Cruz.

SOB... Well, I almost knew this could happen. So far... on the pet food issue, I'm still lucking out. Gawd only knows what human foods we've all eaten that might possibly be contaminated. This thing is going to be enourmous and will most likely trace to someone in DC. Wonder who the fall person is going to be this time?

And ADM is the biggest single-company lobby the White House has ever seen.

Now that's a shocker... NOT

Until there are more answers, I've stopped eating wheat gluten or any baked goods of unknown composition. (Particularly things like pizza are likely to have wheat gluten added.)

Better safe than sorry certainly can't hurt until we have more information.
But I have one more question. 🙂 Is the melamine originally from the planet Melmac?

Maybe they have a pet foods division?
Up until a few years ago Heinz had a large pet food division and they were running it in a reputable fashion. They had comprehensive inspection & QC and even had a large number of animals in the facility to sample the food (mainly for quality/taste). I had a tour of one of their facilities when my buddy's company did a large equipment installation. Heinz got out of pet foods because Walmart was their major customer and they wouldn't lower their quality to met their price point.
