Stiff Link?

It's only this chain and not the cassette/chainring? It's rare that a stiff
link won't show up off the bike, as pedaling forces are much stronger than
anyone's fingers.

Weird thing is that it definitely occurs on a specific link - at
least, that is what 11 hours on the bike listening and trying to watch
and trying different things to get it to happen and to stop. Please
note that my examinations off the bike only occurs pedaling backwards
(clue?) - perhaps there is a burr or something in one link that only
affects one direction of chain travel?

I predict that you will find that it is the Superlink. I recently
switched to using superlink IV's on my Campy Ultra Narrow chain and
had a problem similar to yours. Because the problem started only a
few hundred miles after I put a new chain and link on I too thought it
was a stiff link. But I could not find any problem by backpedaling or
anything like that.

My cassette was relatively new so I ruled it out at first. Finally I
rechecked the chain length using my Rohloff checker and found that
there was a major difference when measured over the Superlink. Using
a pair of calipers I found that the Superlink had worn (or was just
off) by almost 0.010".

Sure enough, when I put the bike up on my stand and loaded the rear
down with a rag while someone cranked the pedals I finally replicated
the problem. The long link was hanging up on the tension side of the
cassette, much like an overly worn chain would on a new cassette.

I put a spare Superlink on and it was better, but was still a few thou
longer than the rest of the chain. After another couple of hundred
miles the problem hasn't yet returned, but I've already picked up a
few Wipperman links and plan to switch to them. Over the years that I
used Wipperman chains I never had a problem with their links.

I have seen these links be 'sticky', on more than one occasion..why I
use Wipperman links for all chains..9s and 10s ones. Remember, the
wipperman has an up and down, or it may skip on an 11t..

Yah, the ends of the curved slot should point down (ish) when the link
is on the bottom run of it's path (IIRC).

I had actually tried a Superlink years ago but had forgotten I didn't
really like it's performance nor durability.

I currently use Wipperman Connex 1008 (and the link supplied) on Campag
Record 10 chainset /derailleurs and Veloce 10 cassettes. I find that the
chains wear (i.e. "stretch"😉 very early so I find myself changing them
after ca. 1000 km.

I want to try Campag Record chains but understand that they're difficult
in joining, requiring a special tool, and I'd prefer to use a master
link instead.

My questions:
1. Is it OK to use the master link from Wipperman/Connex 1008 on
a) the Record 10
b) the Record 10 ultra narrow

2. If not what link is best to use on the above chains?

I am asking because the Campag chains are being advertised a bit cheaper
here and I want to see if they last longer than the Wippermans.

They 'join' the same as Veloce chains. Veloce chains are the same as
Chorus chains, the same as Record chains. Holes in side plates is
Chporus and holes in pins are Record. You need to get a better method
of measuring your chain is you change them at 600 miles. I use a
Rohloff tool and we see chains generally go abpout 2500-3000 miles
before they need changing.

Use the 6.05 on the narrow chain and the 6.2 on the 6.2 chain.

I've used the Wippermann 6.2 mm "wider" 10 speed connecting link on a
5.9 mm "narrower" Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed chain and 5.9 mm Shimano
105 10 speed chain. Same link. I tossed the Veloce chain after
2-3-4,000 or so miles. Just figured it was time to change chains.
Same cassette. Now on the Shimano chain. Bought some KMC reusable 10
speed quick links (Ribble Cycles in England has them) and have a
Wippermann Shimano width (5.9mm) chain and its connector on the way.
So I will get to use other quick connectors sometime over the next
year or two besides the 6.2 mm Wippermann.

Hi Peter,

I agree that I maight be changing chains too often - but it could also
be due to the extreme grit, salt, and slush conditions in which I train
during the winter (Sweden). I don't soak the chains often, mainly wipe
clean(ish), re-oil then wipe again.

I think in Colorado your roads department may be dumping the same sand
etc on icy roads during wintertime. In which case, would you expect the
life of a chain to reduce to the aforementioned 600 mi / 1000 km, or am
I being overly paranoid in changing so often?

For curiosity - you mention both Campag and Shima chains. Are you using
them on each maker's drive train, or have you maybe found that it works
well to use e.g. Shimano on both Shima and Campag cassettes?

For a Campag 10 drivetrain, my intention is to find a chain that is
reliable, long-lasting, and easy-to-join. Low weight and price are not
high priorities.

Maybe the answer is on Sheldon but I will look later.

I only have a 10 speed Campagnolo setup. No Shimano 10 speed. Or 9
speed Shimano. Only Shimano is an early 1990s 7 speed setup on the
loaded touring bike. I used a Veloce 5.9mm 10 speed chain and a
Shimano 105 5.9mm 10 speed chain on the Campagnolo 10 speed setup.
Veloce 10 speed cogs. TA 9/10 speed rings and Real or Vuelta 8 speed
rings. Quick connect link is a Wippermann 6.2mm 10 speed link.
Bought some KMC quick links and will eventually try the Wippermann
6.05mm quick link. Current setup of Wippermann 6.2mm quick link and
Shimano 105 5.9mm chain works fine. Veloce 5.9mm chain with same
Wippermann 6.2mm quick link worked fine. I buy chains mainly on
price. Cheapest wins. Veloce 5.9mm chain was reasonable in cost,
reliable for several thousand miles, and easy to join when using the
Wippermann quick link. I suspect the Shimano 105 5.9mm chain will be
the same.

rings. Quick connect link is a Wippermann 6.2mm 10 speed link.
Bought some KMC quick links and will eventually try the Wippermann
6.05mm quick link. Current setup of Wippermann 6.2mm quick link and
Shimano 105 5.9mm chain works fine. Veloce 5.9mm chain with same
Wippermann 6.2mm quick link worked fine. I buy chains mainly on
price. Cheapest wins. Veloce 5.9mm chain was reasonable in cost,
reliable for several thousand miles, and easy to join when using the
Wippermann quick link. I suspect the Shimano 105 5.9mm chain will be
the same.

Russell, thanks for good and useful info. I will try either Wippermann
6,2 or 6,05 master link with Campag Veloce 5,9 chain when I get the
chance, and see if that chain lasts longer than the Wippermann. What I
now understand is that the marginally wider master link probably makes
no difference (only 100um we're talking about here - I should've
reasoned this earlier, and reading your post made it plain to see ;-)

I agree that I maight be changing chains too often - but it could also
be due to the extreme grit, salt, and slush conditions in which I train
during the winter (Sweden). I don't soak the chains often, mainly wipe
clean(ish), re-oil then wipe again.

I think in Colorado your roads department may be dumping the same sand
etc on icy roads during wintertime. In which case, would you expect the
life of a chain to reduce to the aforementioned 600 mi / 1000 km, or am
I being overly paranoid in changing so often?

I think they use magnesium chloride(?), a chemical melter rather than
salt BUT if the bike(chain) gets really gooky on a ride, I'll take it
off and clean it. Not hard and quick. Plastic bottle and mineral
spirits...shake, shake, shake, remove, let dry, lube and ride the next
day.

I would certainly use a 6.05 mm wipperman link with a 5.9 mm wide chain.
A 6.2 mm Wipperman link is very loose on the ultra narrow campa chain.

what I have. Online places list the new narrow 6.05mm Wippermann
master link for something like $13.99. Seems excessive to me. So I
have not bought one. After many thousands of miles, the Wippermann
6.2mm master link seems to still work fine. Now on its second 10
speed chain. Someday I'll replace it. Don't know if the narrower
6.05 master link works better on 5.9mm chains. Have not tried the
6.05 master link yet. Most likely the 6.05mm master link does not
work worse than the 6.2mm master link.

You might check how much wear the pins on that link have. That will
be the sloppiest link on a new chain and, although you may not notice
it, the sprockets will suffer tooth deformation on the aluminum and
extra wear on the steel ones. Compare its diametral pin wear to that
of a pin of a discarded chain for comparison.
