  1. hey any suggestions for skills to learn prior to learning to coast on
uni, i ride one-footed down the road, pick up some speed, slowly apply
less and less pressure on my pedal, then put my right foot on the crown
    and almost immediatly fall off.....😠

    heeeeeey spencer is here!!

  2. I would learn to at least wheel walk first. I can't glide but most
people are going to tell you that you need to glide first. You don't
but it will help. Also remember that you need to put pressure down on
the frame with your feet, and that you need to balance ontop of the
uni. I also find it helps to just straight up put your foot onto the
frame, don't make it a slow thing. Just pedal a couple times one footed
then pop the foot onto the frame.

Apart from that, practice, practice, practice some more.

  3. yea i can wheelwalk short distances, but its really annoying cause my
    shoes are too slippery

also, i do belive that the balance mechanisms for gliding and coasting
    are VERY different...

  6. I find I have good and bad ww days although recently I am getting more
consistant. try ww up a slight slope I find it helps because it slows
you down a bit so you dont end up going too fast and loosing control. I
may try and coast tomorrow and tell you how I get on

  9. Id say, for coasting:

    1. Learn to walk the wheel.
    2. Learn to one foot walk the wheel
    3. Learn to glide
    4. Learn to coast

  10. once again, gliding and coasting have entirely different balance
    mechanisms...
if you get really good at gliding, and apply less and less presure then
you may be almost coasting, but its really not the same.... from what i
can see you can aproach coasting either indirectly through gliding, and
learn it more easily, or do it the hard way and just lift the riding
foot up while riding one footed....

UPDATE: i have now coasted about 2 feet...:p.....i think that was
mostly luck though😄(even at what a short distance it was...)

ive learned everything i can do on the unicycle besides going forward
and basic directional controll in the last 2 weeks. Im a fast

  13. If you can glide then you will definatly find Coasting alot easier. I
just could never glide and was pigheaded in my ways so I went straight

  14. I am working on coasting, I go to one footing then take my pedaling foot
off. My best so far has only been 25 feet but I have only really done
dedicated practice yesterday. I don't see gliding helping too much
other than just improving overall balance, they dont feel at all the
same to me, but then again I have never tried to coast without being
able to glide so I cant really tell if its really helped.

I dont think bc wheeling hasnt helped me either.

  16. spencer, i do think bc wheeling has helped you with coasting in a very
indirect fashion...i think perhaps it taught you the basic motions
required, although bc wheeling and coasting on a unicycle are
*very*different....on the bc wheel, you place your weight below the
axel, (a bc wheel continues rolling after an UPD, but a unicycle just
sorta bounces away..)but when you coast on a uni your entire body is
above the wheel itself(exeption-during a 1-foot coast the lower leg may
be hanging down by the wheel) making for rather different balance
    mechanisms

an indirect aproach to coasting on a uni that somone could try might be
to raise the plate on a bc wheel higher and higher, until it was
actually above the axel and the person trying this was standing
somwhere around the upper part of the wheel(somone doing this may need
a bar to hold to give them some controll of where the plate was in
relation to their body, probably the reason for no one trying this
before) and they were using the same balance mechanism required for
    coasting on a unicycle....
however, i think the best aproach is to -just go for it-

like with wheelwalking, i started out next to a wall just to learn the
basic foot motions, then moved into the open and started wheelwalking
    from a freemount...eventualy i got it(sort of, after i can coast for a
ways i'll practice wheelwalking some more)

    On an unrelated note:
If you were to create a machine that caused your center of gravity to
actually be below the ground,( besides being rather weighed down by it,
obviously) no balance would be required to do, well, anything at all!!
you would need as much balance as somone hanging from a loose rope,
compared to one standing on it...just a thought🙄

and forwards pedaling:eek: )i learned in the last 2 weeks....
    EDIT:whoops i already sayed that
    feeling newbish

i tryed slack rope walking about a week ago(call me a slacker😄) and it
seems to help with my effort at learning to hover on my uni....

I can ride a bc wheel with the plates upside down so I am above the
axle (and I have jumped off and landed back on them normally once they
flipped) but at that time I would go nowhere when I tried to coast.
I have tried it a little here and there but never committed myself to
learning it. Today I tried for like 5 minutes and I coasted in a half
    circle, so I'm getting there.

  20. Im going to learn to coast first...

Yesterday i was having a lot of problems because i still had a little
bit of trouble riding one-footed, but now i can ride one footed up a
steep hill with my arms crossed behind my back, so im fairly confident
that i can step up to coasting now.....still will take a while, im
thinking around a month, but who knows? if i learn it as fast as i
learned the other stuff i can do.....

ok, going to go put in 10 hours of practice lol

    ok, ok, fine...maybie 8....

ARGH YOU GOT ME....no fewer than 5...😄
