The octalink sure is on the way out... but the ISIS seems to have a
fair following. I am hoping that somebody has or will develop a good
light BB to match the stronglight crankset I just got on ebay. 😉
Seems like with needle bearings, or preloaded angular contact bearings
(like a car) durability would go way up compared to ball bearings...
but then you have to wrestle with higher drag and probably a little
more weight.
Name an ISIS maker that hasn't moved to an external-bearing crank as
their primary product. I wouldn't be surprised to hear there is one, but
of the three manufacturers who collaborated to create it, Truvativ and
Race Face are both offering external-bearing cranks as their top
product, and Chris King doesn't sell cranks or BBs.

There's now an "ISIS Overdrive" spec for a 48 mm diameter bottom
bracket, but a quick search turned up only Haro actually building a
frame with that BB, on a BMX.
FSA has a fairly frank-sounding technical discussion of the current
state of the art, including tricks to make ISIS work better (four
bearings...), and their own proposed oversize-BB standard (MegaTech).
As a fan of the English language, I note that internal capitalization
(aka CamelCase) has become so common that in the FSA FAQ, they just
assume "ISIS Overdrive" should be "OverDrive." I am happy to say that
ISIS somehow resisted the temptation to CamelCase that perfectly
ordinary word.
