Why do so many cyclists feel the need to dress like one, advertising all and sundry? Is it some kind of mating display to attract cyclists of the opposite sex?
I just slip on some shorts and a T-shirt and go for a leisurely ride to unwind after work. Almost every journey I seem to meet one.

If you are sport cyclist, you need to get the best out of every ride. Don't feel I do that when I am struggling against wind resistance or got a sore botty!

If I'm off on a long ride then I wear proper cycling shorts and jersey because it's more more confortable and practical. Nothing particularly garish though, black shorts and a blue top. If it's a ride to Tesco or to the pub then whatever I'm wearing at the time will usually suffice!
There is something about ladies in full cycling kit though.... -- peter

Some people are members of cycling clubs which race more or less seriously; it's often a requirement to wear your club strip when racing. They may also want to show their club affiliation when just cycling, or their club strip may be the only cycling clothes they have Other people are fans of more serious racing teams and like to wear replica strip of those teams. You don't think all those kids you see wearing Manchester United football shirts actually play football for Manchester United, do you?

You'd be more comfortable in proper cycling clothes, and more visible to other traffic in brightly coloured ones.

Good God, I don't cycle to be comfortable. That's what cars are for surely? And most proper cycling clothes are made from by-products of the petrochemical industry, aren't they? Why should I encourage them?
I don't want to be more visible to other traffic. I prefer Stealth cycling. If they can't see me, they can't hit me.

Then there are those of us how just like the jersey. I bought a Festina jersey , not even knowing that it was professional TdeF team. I then proceeded to wear it in France just after the doping scandal hit. I could not understand the weird looks I was getting. 🙂
