Campag Chain Options

There are Wipperman Connex chains in Campag 10 speed, and those have a
re-usable quick-link. They come in a couple of widths for Campag 10 speed,
though (apart from not mixing bits within a chain), I think either 10 speed
type will fit.

I have one on the shelf for the time when my newest bike needs it's stock
Campag chain removing. I also have a spare Connex link as I was told it can
be used to rejoin the Campag chain, no idea if this will work yet (I'll
decide when its off & cleaned whether it is worth refitting)

The SRAM 10 speed chain has a one-use quick-link, so not much better/worse
than stock Shimano/Campag chains, except that a special tool for fitting is
not required.

Yes, I do this myself with the "Shimano" version of the Wipperman Connex
link (inteneded for Wipperman chain). This is a bit narrower than the
"Campagnolo" version and more suitable for Campag Ultra Narrow chain.

It needs to go one particular way up if used with an 11-tooth sprocket,
apparently. Works either way with larger sprockets.

I use a Wipperman Connex magic link with a Campagnolo Record hollow-pin 10
speed chain. Works fine - I had the chain off the bike for a thorough
clean and relube only yesterday.

Thanks, useful to know it will work when I need to remove the chain on mine.
(As it only goes out on dry days, its doing far more miles between
lube/clean than my other bikes).

I have the Campag version of that. It seems to me to work very well -
easier to disassemble than the SRAM magic links, but seem perfectly secure
in use. Pete, what problem do you see with using the Campag version? I've
not noticed any unevenness with it going through the derailleur cages, or
when shifting.

I find there's hardly any spare lateral clearance normally in the cage or
between sprockets, so I wouldn't want to make things trickier/noisier with a
wider link. Not to mention the worry of it coming undone accidentally,
though I don't know if that's possible.

I first saw the combination recommended by Peter Chisolm on
rec.bicycles.tech. In fact even the "Shimano" version is a touch wider than
5.9mm Campag Ultra Narrow links. Seems like common sense not to have an
even wider link when there is a more suitable one available.

The "Campagnolo" link should better suit the older wider Campag 10-speed
chain, as well as Wipperman chain.
