Driving home today, there were an inordiate number of cyclists on the
road, putting along causing a hazard. No I know that despite the fact
that you pay extra for your CAR tag, extra for your CAR fuel and even
extra for your CAR to pay for the roads, cyclists think they have the
same rights to roads as anyone else. One thing though, push comes to
shove, and I for one am not banging into another car ro avoid some
cyclist going 5MPH on a road where the cars are all going 60MPH!

In most cases, cyclists DO have the same rights as a car.

The roads are open to everyone, not just those who pay all the
    expenses associated with a car.

Also, cyclists do far less damage to roads than your average car, and
do virtually zero harm to the environment.

And for the record, I drive about 99% of the time and am only a
"sometimes" bicyclist, though with the weather being nicer here, I
expect to get out a bit more frequently. Hopefully, our paths aren't
going to cross anytime soon, because I'd hate to be killed by some
maniac who was too impatient to slow down for 3 seconds.

Yeah, he won't be boasting about being an impatient killer when he is doing
time with gramma killers and pedophiles.
I think he deserves a couple years just for suggesting it and that has to be
an obvious lie anyway. 60mph zones here are usually restricted to
    bicyclists.

Bring it up with your highway patrol
Cyclists are tested everyday. It just takes one [censored] and you are
toast making most of us highly aware of the rules and risks. Drivers take
one test per life time. Guess who wins the ability test.
BTW, cars are subsidized by the gov't. That's us, because development,
repair, and infrastructure is only paid 3% by gas tax in N. America. You
big baby. You have a license to kill and look at the kind of intelligence
    that uses it. GAG

Most of the expenses related to road mainenance are raised through
general taxes, which cyclinsts pay along with everybody else.

Did the steel from your bicycle just jump out of the ground and make
itself into a frame and all of the other metal parts? Where did those
plastic parts come from? I guess the rubber just materialized out of
thin air too. Oh, and how did that "zero carbon foot print" bicycle get
from the factory to your home? Did somebody ride it there or was it
transported in a truck and then finally your car?

here. How many bikes can one make of all that steel that went into
    your SUV?

Excellent to hear. The roads will quickly be emptied then of all the
motorists I see running red lights, passing illegally, tailgating, and
speeding then? If not, why not?

I know you're trying to make some point here. But really, the cyclists
on this group are generally the fairly law abiding sort. I'm less
worried about the cyclists obeying stop signs [1] than I am with drivers
    doing it.

    [1] Though I agree it's generally a good idea.

True. It's too bad that we have idiots riding 5 mph on a 60 mph road.

Does the road say no bicycles?

Bicycles are considered road vehicles in most all states I believe.

Is a person an idiot if they drive 45 mph when everyone else drives
60 mph? Is the farm tractor driver or construction equipment
driver and idiot because he's not doing 60?

What is the actual speed limit of that road?

Why are you yourself driving if the loss of a few seconds to get
by slower moving vehicles (bicycles in particular) so annoys you
that you classify them as idiots? Are there many of them on that
    road?

You may wish to be chauffeured or helicoptered to where you're going
if your time is that tight for you. Why waste your valuable
    time driving a car?

I may be wrong, since I left the state years ago, but doesn't Maryland have
a law saying no bicycles on roads where the speed limit is posted "above" 45
    mph?

No, bicyclists are restricted from roadways on state roads with posted
speeds above 50 mph - just a technical difference from your comment.
OTOH, you can ride on the shoulder on those roads (turn lanes are also
permitted) and the blathering idiot having all the problems probably
can't handle that either. If he were in Maryland.

Most bicyclists capable of only 5 mph are usually afraid of riding on
    the roadway anyway.

  17. Are you saying that no matter what we do and how we live our lives,
the effect on the environment is all the same, so why even bother?
That's a convenient standpoint, for sure. Yet, there are ways to
reduce the impact, the question is to figure out what matters most. I
honestly don't know about your basement, but a bike clearly wins in
the comparison with an SUV in terms of its impact on the environment,
it's hard to spin this one any other way.

BTW I don't have a basement in my house at all, and I am quite happy
(no mold, no water to suck out of there, no extra space to heat). Not
that I do that by choice, my rental happens to be that way. 🙂
