Thanks for the heads up, Trevor. As it happens, the Lidl/Aldi bike equipment
sales are well known in this group. Unfortunately, you can't predict when
one is about to strike until it appears on the website.

There are a few things on that list that I might go after.

The big black and red clip-on pannier bags with the net pocket are, of
course, excellent. I use one as my standard shopping pannier. It's very
easy to clip on and off. Although it can be squashed fairly flat, it can
expand to an impressive size. Many is the time that I have filled it to the
brim with books and videos when on a charity shop/car boot sale sortie. I
even put a record player in it once. I bought a left and right pannier last
year and I regard it as 20 pounds very well spent. If I had to nitpick, I
would say that it's a shame that it doesn't have any proper pockets.

If the 3.99 handle bar bag is the same as last year's, it's not quite
suitable for a bike like mine. My bike has flat handle bars but they jut
forward. It has a fabric strap system. The older Lidl handle bar had a
clip-on flat plate system that was more suitable for my bike. The one in
the photo looks like the new, cheaper style.

Lidl bike light sets are usually very good.

I might look at the 9.99 handle bar bag but it's a bit expensive sounding
for a 'cheap' one. I might pick up some cheapo bungie chords while I'm
there. I also need some more mudguards, a bell and a new cycle computer.

The only problem with these sales is that I approach the checkout holding
one or two small items and sometimes, people let me skip ahead of them in
the que. I'd rather they didn't because I don't want to /look/ like I want
to skip ahead. Once, an old lady said something like "Oh, why don't you go
ahead of us dear." and her daughter (I presume) said something like "No,
why should he go in front?!!" and stopped me. Most embarrassing...

The cycling tops - windproof front base layers are *excellent* I highly
recommend them as an effective way of helping to keep the chills away when
cycling in cooler weather.

Actually this bike week has been on this same week for the last four years.
Not so sure about the timing of their autumn one though! You do need to be

I need a couple of inexpensive panniers to replace my existing ones which are
on their last legs. I shall certainly have a look at these.

I have found the cycling tops very good and the shorts last year were also
good -- although in the past sizes have been a bit odd and you need to check
carefully. Their sizes are normally like regular clothing sizes and not bike
clothing sizes.
Socks as shown were very good two years ago and I still have a couple of pairs
in use.

I would be interested in the shoes -- at £13 it has got to be worth a look
and even if they are not top quality you should be able to get yours monies
worth out of them. I normally buy a new pair every year and they last me two
years if I am lucky but I need shoes I can walk in for both my day to day
cycling and my long cycle/camping tours ---- I like a good layer of "tread"
under my soles to avoid sounding like a tap dancer!

Pity there are no mitts! Or when I think about it I got them from ALDI last
year

I bought this tool box 2 or 3 years ago and it is still in use. The worst
things in it were the tyre levers ( made of plastic - but I still have them)
but of the rest of the tools that I have used I have had no complaints and I
carry a small selection of them in my pannier pockets on tour.And at £16 ( I
think it was then) I have had my monies worth!

Didn't like the "Bicycle repair and tool kit" though -- the seat post pack
mount didn't fit properly so it didn't survive very long and the tyre levers
in it were worse than those in the tool box. and broke at a first attempt.

I'll second this.
The boxed tool kit is certainly worth the money, although I moved the adjustable
spanner into the toy box.
Everything else, although not top quality, has been fine.

Back home they don't seem to apply for planning permission for their stores.
Once the council made them apply retrospectively which was granted on
condition they removed their illuminated signs which were stopping people
across the road from sleeping. They challenged that and agreed to switch
them off at night instead, albeit at some silly time like 11pm when a lot of
people are already in bed trying to sleep.

I bought some of the bits last time round.

The red panniers are well made but the clips are cheese. Mine broke
(OK taking them off road through the cairngorms when fully laden was a
bad idea!) so I replaced the clips with R&K ones and, for about 12-15
quid per bag, have a pair of high quality panniers.

The toolkit is variable. Tyre levers are [censored]. Cone spanners iffy. The
spoke key is barely acceptable and my chain tool broke. Apart from
that it is fine.

The shoes are fine. Cheap and they don't fit me brilliantly but
perfectly functional.

Clothing is usually good if you can get your size.

Hmmm... that makes rather interesting reading. As you say, a lot of
this is unsubstantiated in this article, but I do find it believable.
If even a part of it is true, I can understand why staff locally are
miserable.

find that the £3.99 rack is actually enough to drop my new bike from a
great height.
