  1. I'd value input from you all as to what to do in this scenario (which
    happened this afternoon):
    - End of club run, group strung out, approaching a railway bridge that's
    single carriageway
    - Motorist (high gear engine sreaming) overtakes part of group but not
    safely as bridge is imminent
    - Gets alongside me, edges past, starts pulling over towards curb and
nearside bridge wall (only the driver is past me, the rest if the car is
    not!)
    - Pulls further across me, front wheel bounding off kerb, still not past
    - I tap on rear left window of car with knuckles three times to let driver
know he's just about to squash me
    - Driver slows up, doesn't move out, winds window down and starts tirade of
threats as to what will happen to me if I touch his beloved car again (I
don't respond - somewhat shocked, and also by now being forced almost into
hedge, as bridge has been passed over, and the road is now wide enough for
    two cars)
    - Driver leaves me alone without causing me physical injury and revs up to
behind the next cyclist, who he cuts up similarly.

The question is - I have the guys registration number - do I report the
incident to our friends in blue, or just be grateful that no injury ensued
and leave it at that - I guess I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle, and
whether any action is likely to be taken?

    Cheers,
    Chris

Report him with the names of witnesses from the club. It may not do any
good but they may have a word or do something and you could save a less
experienced cyclist in the future from being injured. It takes about as
much time as it took you to write your e-mail to complete the report form.

    Wot 'e said.

Had something similar on a club run a few years ago, and the local bobbies
did take it seriously, if only because more than one cyclist reported it,
and although they didn't prosecute, they did have some very firm words with
    the driver.

Do it, and make sure others on the ride do so too. How will you all feel
when you read about some other cyclist who wasn't so lucky when this driver
    does the same to them?

Report him. You might not be the only person he's done this to and
your complaint might just be enough to trigger a visit from the plod.

He may already have a string of complaints against him and one more may move
    the police into action.

I reported some yelling yobs in a car a couple of months back, even though I'd
only managed to get half teh Reg No.. Apparently they were already known to
the police and received a visit from the local PC who gave them a firm
    warning.

    Report him.

Report him. I had an incident a few years ago when a driver took
offence, cut me up and threatened me. 5 minutes later he cut me up a
second time and threatened me again. I diverted to the nearest police
station and reported him (I was close to home and didn't want him
following me there...). What the police took particularly seriously was
the fact that he had repeated the threat. He was visited and cautioned
about his behaviour, but nothing more was done at the time partly
because there was no other witness.
I understand that some months later the same driver was involved in
another another incident and reported again. On that occasion he was
prosecuted largely because it could be shown that, after my report,
there was now a history of him using threatening behaviour.

Report him, in writing, to your local police. Include only facts, not
feelings. Leave out such phrases as "he nearly killed me", include as many
verifiable witnesses as possible plus contact details. Photographs are
    good, as are diagrams.

My local route to work is gradually getting safer through such reportings.
The police DO take an interest though a conviction will take something much
more solid such as video evidence, a following police car, injury or death.

Remember - it's your word against theirs so get as many reliable and
consistent words from as many witnesses as possible.

A cycling copper told me that the words "I felt my life was in danger"
is the phrase to go for.

Seriously, get some witnesses and do him. He could kill someone next
    time.

Nooooooohhh. Leave it to the police to get the words from the witnesses
and do not discuss your story with the witnesses to get consistency.
That would ruin any prosecution and could be seen as conspiracy to
    pervert the course of justice.

I don't much approve of ASBOs and the short circuiting of the judicial
process, but the Police now can and will issue ASBOs for this sort of
thing. Obviously it depends on the policy of the local force, but
reporting it is definitely worth while.

  15. Two choices really. Neither of them is do nothing. Report him and persue it
as far as you can or find out where he lives and take action yourself (more
realistic in cities where most car drivers are never more than a mile or two
from home) You'll need to be very insistent with the police as it's in their
interest to put you off making a complaint.....

they'll look at his record before sentencing...

I agree, the police are under staffed and under enthused, it's the law of
    the jungle these days.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement - I did perform my civic duty and
don't hold out much hope of any formal action with the lukewarm "your word
against his" response from Her Majesty's finest, but at least the eejit is
now on record for being a naughty boy. Let's just hope they fire a warning
shot towards him and that he thinks twice before he picks on a cyclist
    again.

Were you not able to persuade someone else to act as a witness?

It really does make a great deal of difference.

Look at it from Her Majesty's Finest's POV.

They stand absolutely no chance of getting anything to court without
corroberating evidence and all they would achieve if they went to have a word
with a numbnuts like the one you describe, all they'd get would be a load of
abuse - and numbnuts would have an even bigger chip on his shoulder.
