  1. Following the international diplomatic furore over supposedly racist
comments on Big Brother recently, I thought you may be interested to
see an excerpt from the CTC Grampian DA newsletter recently passed to
me. (For those who are geographically challenged, Grampian is in
    Scotland.)

    Start of quote:

    "SHORT ARMS IN GRAMPIAN?

The <recently ordered> jerseys.... have sleeves that are too long for
us in Grampian. Some people say they are 5 inches too long. They were
made somewhere in England. Could it be that the average arm's length
is longer down South? Is it because down South they are closer to the
tropics and thus more closely related to forest-dwelling primates?"

    End of quote.

I think we should have Gordon Brown's comments on this.

No, we need longer arms down here so that we can reach to the bottoms of our
pockets to get the money to buy a round :-D

    I'll get my coat.

I thought it was well known that Scotsmen have deep pockets and short
    arms ;-)

Perhaps if they ate less fish and chips their bodies would be better
proportioned? IIRC Scotland is one of the fattest places in Europe.

I used to get one once every week or two at lunchtime from a chippy in
Tunbridge Wells. I don't believe I know of any treat more delicious.

I had one in an 'authentic chop house' on Fleet Street.

Cost a fiver, and came with a raspberry coulis.

You forgot the can of Irn Bru to wash it down.

But for anyone who wants to try it at home, remember to start from a
*frozen* Mars bar (at a minimum, a very cold one).

    B*gger, I didn't know that!
My Mars bar leaked out of the batter and made a mess in the dripping.

BTW you can get them at Southam north of Banbury, and mince pies fried
    in batter at Hogmanay.

Fried in batter isn't cooking, it's industrial engineering.

Here is why not, courtesy of my grate frend Dai Infidel:

"A chippie in my folks' hometown in Wales starting selling these. So, I
tried one, as a bet. The Mars bar was dipped in vanilla flavoured
doughnut-stylee batter, fried in a separate fryer from the savoury items and
dried so that it wasn't greasy. So, what you had was a doughnut filled with
an amorphous chocolate-caramel-nougat centre. The sugar-rush was
breathtaking and it didn't taste too bad.

So, of course, I started recommending them to my friends, but in the
meantime the MURDOCK'S DELIGHT [The Censor]-shop owner decided that he
couldn't be BOTHERED [The Censor] with all that faffing around and started
to dip the Mars bar in the same batter as the savoury stuff and fry them in
the same fryer. So my friends, acting on my recommendation, one day found
themselves eating sausage-flavoured greasy battered burning-hot Mars bars.

I've never lived down the shame. My recommendations on food, drink, cinema,
music, literature are now completely discounted because everyone remembers
when I recommended deep-fried Mars bars."
