Quoted message said:Hi,
Are there any locking panniers/"trunks" for bikes? I'm thinking of something to mount on a rear
rack that I can lock, so I can leave the contents secure while I leave the bike (also locked)
unattended. I've seen a lot of panniers, but nothing that can lock. It would also help if this
item is waterproof as I will ride in the rain on occasion.
I'd like enough capacity/weight to carry my emergency pump, 2 inner tubes, rain slicks, all in one
bike tool, patch kit, 4 tire levers, work clothes (including shoes), and 2 small plastic bags of
groceries or a few books.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Dear [email hidden],
I fear that you may be on the wrong track.
The tremendous improvements in car keys and locks are often blamed (rightly or wrongly) for the
modern increase in carjackings. If thugs can't take your car quietly with a slim-jim and start it
with a crude method, they simply smash the window and threaten you.
Along these lines, which do you want to lose? Your carrier or the bike from which it's going to be
torn off? One good heave or wrench and either your carrier is torn off or else your frame is headed
for the scrap heap.
I wish that I had a solution. Maybe some kind of quick-detach carrier that can be removed and locked
separately to whatever you're locking your bike and wheels to? But if the carrier isn't metal, a
pair of penny-cutting shears will . . .
Sorry,
Carl Fogel
