  1. Hi,
Anyone know any tricks to fit new gear levers to frames without the down
tube braise on bits ? I don't think I can get the frame braised as the
bottom bracket is there 'for the duration'. It's an old Claud butler /
reynolds 501/531(?) type frame and I want to fit STI levers.

    Cheers,

    Bruce.

You can get shifter bosses that strap to the downtube. I got some from
Andrew Muzi at the Yellow Jersey (http://www.yellowjersey.org/) a while
    back. They were very inexpensive.

If you want to use 'brifters' (STI or Ergo), what you really need is a
clamp on cable stop. You can find NOS ones from Campy, Suntour, etc.,
on eBay or from a shop like Yellow Jersey, Bikeville, etc.

"Bottom bracket there for the duration"? Getting shifter bosses or
threaded cable stops brazed on is very much an option if you want to.

I can sell you a suntour downtube cable stop for $4.50 (free
shipping.) Please contact me off-list for details. I have several
    available.

You can (at least I think you still can) buy "clamp-on" stops for
converting from frame mounted to handlebar shifters (or "brifters"😉.
These used to come standard with Bar-Cons. Some even come with cable
    adjusting barrels.
