Nice but....Assuming a fan diameter of 100mm and an absolutely ideal turbine and
generator you can just about make the 0.17W at 8 MPH
The power output goes a the cube of speed, so a bit faster is a lot
better, but still I'd say viability is marginal.--

You point your handlebars into the prevailing wind.
No problem as the prevailing wind always seems to be in your face when
cycling. -

Why not convert energy from the rotating wheel.... oh wait, someone did that
already and it works.... -

0.17W isn't enough to ride by. You need about a 1W LED for that, and
even then it's marginal. -

conversions................Makes as much sense as wind power. Drag is drag.
I sure do wish I didn't have to keep recharging those batteries or replacing
them but thems the breaks, huh. -

of mixing pasta with antipasto? <g>Speaking of wind, do any of you use the Davis WindScribe?
It comes with a handlebar mount for bicycle use,
but I'm wondering if I get caught out in a rain, is it water resistant,
water proof, or will the ultrasonic wind sensors suffer?

Neither the web site nor the included literature mentions it being
weather proof nor cautions against exposure either.--

pretty much only that needed to power the lamp, not the horrid friction
drag of the old-style bottle dynamos. Those were definetly works of
one of Stan's close relatives!Anything involving batteries that need to be replaced more than once
every couple of months is evil. -

batteries are dead. What's even dumber, it's on a low speed electric bike
that carries a ton of excess power for one stinking bulb. I need to order
in a 36V bulb and wire it directly into a switch drawing power from the main
system. Then the problem of batteries is a bust.Of course, I am also planning on adding stop lights and turn signals. Why
not? -

Yes.
Or do you mean that I bring in 10 buddies and we do it in stages (grin)
