Raising handlebars?

  1. Hi, just got another bike .. 3rd one ๐Ÿ™‚ It doesn't have an aheadset, but
    rather a huge bolt that loosens off. I loosened it, but the handlebars
    didn't budge. I didn't want to muck about too much, thinking it's best to
    ask the FOAK on here ...

    Have you walloped the huge bolt downwards with a hammer to release the
    wedge? (Sorry - I meant "Have you applied gentle percussive force..."๐Ÿ˜‰

    And remember to use a small block of wood between the hammer and the
    bolt. Avoids marking the bolt.

    I loosened the top silver bolt. What about the bottom one? Does that need

    Sounds like a quill - does the large bolt go down through handlebars
    into the forks? If yes, loosen it a bit and tap with a hammer
    (protect the top of the bolt with a bit of wood). Still stuck? Hit it
    a bit harder. This will (hopefully) loosen the wedge/quill and let
    you pull the bars up. Keep an eye on the minimum insertion mark.
    Tighten up the bolt when you're at the right place.

    Yup - undo the top silver bolt about 1/4", then user yer 'ammer! The
    bottom bolt only holds the bars to the stem, so that can stay put.

    No, just tap on the top bolt. You'll know immediately if the wedge
    moved. If it didn't, hit the bolt a bit harder. Once the wedge drops
    you should be able to move the stem in the headset/steerer.

    By the look of the kit it wouldn't be a big surprise if the stem is
    stuck in the steerer tube. If this is the case, see:

    DO NOT TOUCH IT!

    The top 'bolt', which you loosened, is the locknut on your headset. The
    lower one actually controls the tension of the headset bearing. If you get
    this either too tight or too loose you will fsck the headset bearing.
    Tighten down the locknut again, CAREFULLY, to avoid altering the position
    of the headset bearing cap.

    Now: at the very top of the stem, visible in the picture, is a SMALL
    allen-headed bolt coaxial with the stem. Loosen this a couple of turns and
    then tap it smartly down with a wooden or rubber mallet. The stem is now
    free, and you can adjust it. When done, tighten up again.

    But note that in the current position the stem appears from the photograph
    to be adjusted well above its minimum insertion mark, so you /must/ lower
    the handlebars at least until the mark is hidden.

    Ah!!! You've been thinking laterally. When elyob said he undid the top
    bolt, we all assumed he meant the, er, top bolt that tightens the wedge,
    and not the headset locknut.

    I'll have a look, but in that case it will be a very short stem. Hopefully
    that mark is just where it widens out.

    Aha, so I should have touched the top, top one? The other one I returned to
    its original position, not overtightened, and the steering is still fine. I
    also didn't try any force to move anything.

    I suspect that, when you slacken it off (only a few turns) and whack it,
    the end result will be a loose bolt but the stem will remain stuck fast
    with corrosion. But maybe you'll be lucky ... Also it does look as if
    it's about as high as it will go already - you'll probably have to get a
    hybrid-type stem if you want to raise the bars.
