point me in the right direction please?

That just opens a reply window, doesn't take me to a thread, but thanks for
trying.

Search for the thread with Unclean in the title. There is only one in
September. Of course if you had a decent newsreader...... ;-)

It's a message-id. If you don't know what to do with it, that's your
failing, not the poster's.
If you don't have anything else, try taking it groups.google.com and
sticking it somewhere.

Install Gravity and clicking on the ID gives you the option to find the
article on Google Groups :-)

As does Thunderbird with the MessageID-finder extension. Allows you to
find the article on Google, any of the news servers you are subscribed
to or the local store.

However, using a combined email app and newsreader does increase the
risk of occasional misposts. ;-)

First one I've ever done actually.

Mmm so Thunderbird and Norwetya are not decent newsreaders. OE needs
"news" in front of an ID too, but then everyone <==spot the hyperbole
says OE is a heap... .

According to the standard, it should require 'news:' in front of it.
Perhaps it does, in which case full marks to OE, fail to Gravity and
Thunderbird. Of course the general principle 'be conservative about what
you generate, liberal about what you accept' allows Gravity and
Thunderbird a get-out clause, but if you teach your users that they can
get away with being sloppy they may never learn how to do things
correctly - and then blame other people with correctly functioning
software for things not working.

I'm fed up with Life 1.0. I never liked it much and now it's getting
me down. I think I'll upgrade to MSLife 97 -- you know, the one that
comes in a flash new box and within weeks you're crawling with bugs.

I don't think either does it by a click of the ID. Tbird treats is as an
e-mail address too (don't know about Gravity) But unlike OE you can add
an extension that allows you to right click it and query it to a news
server of your choice thus solving the problem of strict non-compliance.
BTW Chris Slade who posted the message link in question was using KNode
at the time, so not full marks for KNode for creating the problem in the
first place.

Gravity pops up a box that says

KNode, which is what I'm using just now, has nothing to do with the
problem; it does not automatically generate message references in the body
text. It's luser error.

One assumes he lifted the message reference from his newsreader and if
the reference was properly formatted it would seem odd that he would
only copy and paste half of it. But ICBW

No, you're right, and I stand corrected. Or, to be more precise, I sit; but
there you go.

You may be right, I cut and pasted it from the headers in the message. Hand
formatting seemed superfluous at the time, but you live and learn...
Yet another reason to dislike knode.
