Mpeg or WMV.
Personally, I strongly dislike Youtube and other streaming solutions
that actively prevent downloading vids to hardrive.
I understand why they do it, as they make money through people having
to use their advertising laden webpages to view the movies- however, I
don't agree with it; the internet used to be an excellent place for
true enthusiasts of minority activities to post their vids so
-everyone- could benefit from watching them.
YouTube streaming vids are not for everyone- for example those on
dial-up who won't be willing to spend the amount of time downloading
for each view of the vid.
As for the various software that enables -download- of Youtube vids,
the problems are that they're somewhat patchy, can involve a lot of
messing around and, even when they do work well, it's going to be a
temporary solution only, as the likes of Youtube will actively modify
their webpages/vids to prevent such downloads.
IMO, Youtube and its like are more examples of the internet going
downhill and what we need is a little campaign to encourage people to
cease from posting their vids on them.
Unicycling and many other minority sports like Parkour (free running),
poi, backyard wrestling etc, etc owe much of their growth to the use of
the internet to spread info, inspiration and vids, with an attitude
based on free sharing and non-exclusivity: Let's keep it that way and
leave Youtube etc to make their money -without- our help.
