You'll never achieve the status of elite cyclist without gloves.
🙂 🙂 🙂

theres a few benefits i can think of:
a) some have a gel pad and can help some riders with hand numbness on longer riders.
b) if you come off the natural instinct is to put your hand down. gloves stop you losing the skin off your palm (painful). given i've come off a lot on a mtb and usually ride in full finger gloves i can confirm the benefit of this point.
c) in summer your hands sweat, no gloves and this ends up on your bar tape which then ends up greasy. with gloves the bar tape stays drier.

More reasons;
* More advertising space
* Cover up the LOVE HATE tattoos on your fingers

+1... V. painful, and V.messy.
you use your hands every day, its a good idea to keep them protected if you intend to keep using them!

exactamundo! Pros crash semi-regularly, so they can easily protect their hands by wearing gloves -- even a small bingle can result a painful hand graze. Also, when hammering in warm, or even mild weather, sweaty, slippery hands can be a bit dangerous if you ride on the hoods.

also, you and Faux PAs seem to be doing a lot of posting recently, yet you're not on the biggest forum of all: Bike Fourms http://www.bikeforums.net/ ???? :p
it's probably 98% U.S., so don't expect much Aussie chat
where I ride, it's hot almost year round...I wear gloves to keep from sweating all over my bars....and they've also helped preventing numbness
Grip.
My hoods get slippery with sweat, so it's nice to have gloves for grip.
ever tried to wipe a sticker off of your tire with a bare hand? ouch.

oh, and one of the biggest reasons i forgot: the terry thumb so you can wipe the rogue snot rocket that's stuck you your cheek. possibly the greatest reason to wear gloves.
I don't wear my gloves...I find them too hot.
But then, last year I fell off and hurt my left hand (bad bruise, no skin loss). If I had my gloves on it may have been less pain. Potential accidents is the only reason I would wear them, and I still don't put them on.
All those posts about getting sweaty w/o them.....I have ridden in over 100 F temperatures on the road, and no problem.
I prefer using gloves myself. The little bit of padding is nice to lean down on compared to my barehand. That's my whole reason for using them. They make the longer rides a lot more comfortable for me.
The heat that I may trap in while wearing them hasn't crossed my mind once...never even noticed. The side benefits of protecting my hand in a fall or being able to wipe off a tire are just more to add to my willingness to wear them.
Gloves have become so much part of my ridding setup that i even use gloves on the exercise bike.🙂
The usual answers are around comfort, safety preventing sweat geting on the handlebar tape, but heres another, perhaps someone can verify if it is true or not.
In a race, a rider, I won't name him, but hes an Aussie sprinter with a cracked vertibrae. Stopped, did a [censored] and then wiped his behind with his gloves and abandomed them.
Another slightly odd use for gloves....
I was riding to work a month or two ago and dropped the chain off my mountain bike. My right foot came off the pedal and I landed my right knee neatly on a chainring tooth.
As I was not carrying anything for staunching the blood flow, my glove had to suffice :-)
Seriously, gloves are fantastic. Much more comfortable than bare hands, and handy if you do come off. There aren't really any downsides I can think of.

I wear them because I have sweaty hands....I always have sweaty hands. I have tried to go without but just don't feel safe because the bars become slippery.
I was going to have all the pours sewn shut but figured wearing gloves was easier.
It is hot and humid in Austin and just plain hot in El Paso so I go with the gloves.
over here in the winter we use them for the simple reason that if we didn't our hands would be too cold to hold the bars / work the brakes!
Just got the new Sealskinz for this winter, they seem just fine!
