Werner, a drugs specialist, was asked by the Spanish authorities to look over the documents. "I inspected the file on Jan Ullrich compiled in Madrid and all I can say is that it's been some time since I've seen so much bad stuff," Franke told Rheinmaintv on Thursday. "Some of the people in his entourage are truly diabolical to advise him to take these products and to put him in contact with the Spanish doctor."
Franke was responsible for exposing the culture of doping in the former East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ullrich has consistently denied taking any form of drugs after he was implicated in Operacion Puerto."
And to think that he was probably doped to the gills during all of his losses to the last clean Tour Champion. ;-)

Have you seen the recent article by Gazetto where a retired Italian sprinter describes how everyone is doing it? Literally everyone. When you get signed by your first pro team, they break the news to you, and you either hop on board, or you go the hell home.

If you do some digging, you'll find that as far back as 1995 on rbr I expressed doubts about Lemond and steroid use. But hey, he never tested positive.

Suspicious. On the other hand, when two journalists, Dominique Le Glou and Alain Vernon, made a program in 1988 about the use of doping among cyclists and the role of dr. Bellocq in particular, in the Tour of '89 everybody refused to talk with them, with one exception: Greg LeMond...

IIRC, Bellocq was a proponent of hormonal adjustments. If your testosterone level was 1:1, he would advocate bringing it up to 3:1. That's obviously an over simplification , but he was widely known and profiled extensively in L'Equipe more than once. When he died in 1993 during the Giro, Lemond was reported to be visibly upset at his untimely and early death from a heart attack.

That's not quite what he said. Riders are already doping at the elite w/o contract level just to get the contract. When you get the contract, someone takes you aside, and just between the two of you, tells you how things are. But it's up to you. If you don't want, then you don't have to, and you're not ostracized. You keep racing clean until you have to stop because you can't get a contract anymore. But Signor Anonymato also said that the team puts you through a testing regime to help determine what kind of preparation you need... And he said that he only doped for a year to try to get that contract, and he did it all himself w/o outside help, practically becoming a nurse, because he didn't want to involve anyone else. He didn't have to dope as much as others because he has a natural hematocrit of 45%, but lesser humans get a lot more benefit. As far as he's concerned, a clean rider can't win, but since everyone dopes, doping doesn't affect the finishing order... These days he's a carpenter.
